IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The Flow diagram illustrates the process of making sugar from sugan cane.Overall, the manufacturing process of sugar from sugar cane consists of seven sequential stages.
In the intitial stage, sugar cane is cultivated, it requires 12 to 18 months for growing process.Subseuently, in the second step the sugar canes are harvested either by laboure or either via machine. Afterwads, the third step involves the crushing of the sugar canes then it provides juice. At the fourth stage of the process, the obtained juice is purified through filter by using limestone filter paper. Furthermore, in the 5th stage, juice is heated in a evaporator and transformed into syrup. Then 6th step is centrifuge which is very crucial in manufacturing of the sugar. In this process the syrup is centrifuged, during this process the sugar crystals got separate from liquid syrup. In the culminate stage sugar crystal are cool down and dried.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the full sequence and include the key overview that production has seven stages, with the growing period of 12–18 months and both harvesting methods. The account also correctly describes crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This gives the reader a clear picture of the process. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: for example, the diagram shows a limestone filter, but “limestone filter paper” adds a detail not provided, and the final stage is described as cooling and drying sugar crystals without clearly stating that the centrifuge separates them from the remaining syrup. To strengthen the response, report only what the diagram shows and make the separation and final product explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in the correct order, and sequencing expressions such as “In the initial stage,” “Subsequently,” and “At the fourth stage” help the reader follow the process. The overall arrangement is coherent, and the opening overview gives the response a useful frame. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical because nearly every sentence begins with a stage marker, and the final stage is not clearly introduced as the seventh step. Some sentence boundaries also run together, as in “sugar cane.Overall” and “process.Subsequently,” which interrupts the flow. Grouping related stages into paragraphs and varying the transitions—for example, linking the centrifuge directly to the final drying stage—would make progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “harvested,” “crushing,” “purified,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuged.” These terms generally communicate the stages accurately, and the response shows an attempt to use more specific language than simple repetition of “process.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “laboure” is not the appropriate form, “limestone filter paper” is not supported by the diagram, and “the culminate stage” is an unnatural phrase. There are also spelling slips such as “sugan,” “intitial,” and “Subseuently.” More precise process collocations and careful proofreading would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the opening overview and the clause “during this process the sugar crystals got separate from liquid syrup.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The sentence “In the initial stage, sugar cane is cultivated, it requires 12 to 18 months for growing process” joins two independent clauses with only a comma and has an incomplete article pattern. Other examples include “in a evaporator,” “sugar crystal are,” and “are cool down and dried,” where article use, agreement, and verb form need correction. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent. Use full stops or conjunctions to connect clauses, and check articles, plural agreement, and passive verb forms.
