How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided process diagram illustrates the prosedures of converting suger cane into pure sugar suitable for daily use. Overall, the process starts from the planting of sugar canes which will go through multi-stage process to produce the final form of commercial sugar.

In the first step, sugar canes need from 12 to 18 monthes to be ready for harvesting. After harvesting these canes will be crushed for making it in liquid phase as juice. This juice has some impurities so it need to be purified by limestone filter.

After purification this liquid will be introduced to vessel to heat it up untill evaporation, when juice becomes syrup we should move this syrup to a centrifugal to seperate ugar crystals from syrup. Furthermore, the final step is drying and cooling these crystals to become ready for packing, also we should take into consideration that this is the most important step for commercial purposes and for the introduction of sugar to markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence accurately, including the 12–18-month growing period, harvesting, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation into syrup, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the transformation from cane to sugar. However, some details are less fully reported: the diagram shows harvesting by either machine or hand, and this useful comparison is omitted. The final claim that the crystals are ready for packing and that this is the most important commercial step is not shown in the diagram, so it should be removed. A more complete account would describe the two harvesting methods and keep the summary strictly grounded in the stages presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an overview followed by a chronological account, and the stages are presented in a clear, logical order. Linking expressions such as “In the first step,” “After harvesting,” and “After purification” help the reader follow the process. The final sentence, however, combines drying and cooling with unsupported comments about packing and commercial importance, making the ending less focused. Some transitions could also make the sequence of later stages clearer, particularly the move from evaporation to centrifuging. Overall, the paragraphing and progression are effective; keep each sentence focused on the diagram and use concise links to show how one stage leads to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” and “centrifugal,” which helps explain the production stages. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “introduced to vessel” could be expressed as “transferred to a vessel,” while “move this syrup to a centrifugal” should refer to a “centrifuge.” There are also spelling errors, including “prosedures,” “suger,” and “seperate.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and control. Check spelling carefully and favour standard technical terms from the diagram; this will make the description more precise and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “sugar canes which will go through” and a time clause beginning “when juice becomes syrup.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “it need to be purified” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “sugar canes need from 12 to 18 monthes” is not formed accurately. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “introduced to vessel” requires an article, and the long final sentence joins several ideas with a comma. Use accurate present-simple forms for process descriptions, check singular and plural agreement, and divide the final sentence into shorter, controlled clauses.
