How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The supplied diagram demonstrate the way in which sugar is made from sugar cane.

As an overall trend, making sugar from sugar cane start with growing sugar cane and end with cooling and drying sugar. This process compeletly takes seven steps.

By the first glance, this begin with growing sugar cane. Sugar cane takes 12 to 18 month for its complete growth. After its growth, the second step is to harvest it. Harvesting has options, you can cut the sugar cane by hand or with heavy machinery. The third step of this process is crushing the sugar cane and poring its juice.

After making juice, a filter named limestone filter is used for purifying its juice. When it is completly purifyed evaporator is used and heat is given to the juice, so that it becomes syrup. The second last process is separating the sugar crystals from syrup. For this, centrifuge is used and the last process is to dry and cooling the sugar crystals. After this process sugar is made and can be used.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full sequence and include several important details: the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, juice purification, evaporation into syrup, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the start and end of the process and states that it has seven steps. This gives the report a clear account of the diagram. To make the description more complete and precise, clarify the crushing stage by stating that the cane is fed into a crusher and juice is extracted, rather than saying it is “poring its juice.” The final outcome could also be described more directly as sugar crystals. Some stages are explained more fully than others, so adding a little detail to the less-developed steps would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in the correct order, and sequencing expressions such as “The third step,” “After,” and “The second last process” help the reader follow the process. The response also separates its overview from the detailed account, which supports the overall organisation. However, the body is a single long paragraph, and some transitions feel mechanical or imprecise. For example, “After making juice” does not clearly connect the crushing and purification stages, while “After this process” repeats the idea of sequence without adding much. Use paragraphing to distinguish the overview from the process details, and link stages through clearer references such as “The resulting juice is then purified.” This would make cohesion smoother and reduce reliance on step-by-step labels.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which helps communicate the diagram’s technical stages. There is some useful variation in how you describe the process, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “poring its juice,” “complete growth,” and “the way in which sugar is made” could be expressed more naturally and precisely. Spelling errors such as “compeletly,” “completly,” and “purifyed” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process verbs and standard forms, for example “extract the juice,” “reach maturity,” and “purified.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic process description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a purpose/result construction in “heat is given to the juice, so that it becomes syrup.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The supplied diagram demonstrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “making sugar from sugar cane start” also needs a plural or singular subject form that agrees with its verb. There are problems with articles and number in “12 to 18 month,” as well as the construction “the last process is to dry and cooling.” These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they make the description less accurate. Check agreement, singular/plural forms, and parallel verb structures when revising.
