How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the number of steps involved in the process of producing sugar from sugar cane. The process starts from growing the sugar canes and ends with drying and cooling to get the final product, which is sugar.Overall , it is a linear, multi staged process.

Firstly, sugar canes are grown which takes about 12 to 18 months. After that, the harvesting is done mechanically or manually. Later, the sugar canes are crushed in a machine and the juice from it is collected in a container. Then, it is purified in a filter made of limestone. The next stage is to evaporate the juice be applying heat until it becomes syrup.Later on, the sugar crystals are seperated from the syrup with the help of centrifugal force. Finally , drying and cooling takes place, completing the whole process and producing sugar.

In conclusion, the process of making sugar is a labor extensive, which requires specific settings and takes up a bulk amount of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers the main sequence accurately, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, heating to form syrup, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The opening also gives a clear overall view that the process is linear and ends with sugar. However, the final conclusion that production is “labor extensive” and requires “specific settings” is not supported by the diagram, and the claim about taking “a bulk amount of time” is not developed beyond the growing stage. The description would be stronger if it focused consistently on visible information and explained the key transformation from cane to juice, then syrup, then separated crystals, rather than adding unsupported evaluation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The stages are presented in a logical order, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the detailed sequence. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After that,” “Then,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical and repetitive, with “Later” and “Later on” used for successive steps. The final “In conclusion” paragraph also interrupts the process description by introducing a general judgement rather than summarising the diagram. To strengthen progression, group the stages more deliberately and use a concise overview that highlights the process’s main phases, while keeping the detailed account in sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a process, and several task-specific terms are used effectively, including “limestone,” “evaporate,” “syrup,” and “centrifugal force.” These choices help convey the technical stages. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, however: “the number of steps involved” is less direct than describing the process itself, “labor extensive” is not the appropriate expression, and “a bulk amount of time” is awkward. There are also spelling errors in “seperated” and “staged.” Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise verbs such as “extract,” “filter,” and “separate” can make the account clearer without adding unsupported detail.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause “which takes about 12 to 18 months” and the time clause “until it becomes syrup.” Most stages remain understandable, and the sequence is generally expressed clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “the juice from it is collected” has an unclear pronoun reference, while “The next stage is to evaporate the juice be applying heat” contains an incorrect verb form. The final sentence, “the process … is a labor extensive,” is also structurally incomplete. Missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent spacing around commas affect punctuation. Review verb patterns and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation to improve accuracy.
