IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of sugar from the sugar cane.
It is linear process involve 7 stages of manufacturing, starting with the growing of sugar cane and ending with drying and cooling.
Starting with the growing phase of sugar cane which took 12-18 months.Once mature, the cane is harvested , either manually or by the machine. Following the next step is crushing. During extraction, the sugar cane are placed in between machines rollers and the juice is obtained at the other end of machine.
Next stage is purification, the juice is passed through the limestone filter placed in the funnel. After that next phase is evaporation, which is done by heat in close container. The moisture evaportes, leaving behind the sugar syrup.
Furthermore syrup is then pass through a centirfuge to separates the sugar crystals. Last step of this manufacturing process is drying and cooling of sugar. After this we get sugar in the form of small crystals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the process from cane growing through to drying and cooling, and its overview correctly identifies seven stages and the 12–18-month growing period. It also reports the two harvesting methods and the main transformations: crushing produces juice, heating turns it into syrup, and centrifuging separates crystals. These details make the account relevant and largely accurate. Some features are less fully described: for example, the limestone filter is mentioned, but its role in purifying the juice could be stated more clearly, and the final product is described as “small crystals,” which is not specified in the diagram. To strengthen the report, keep every detail grounded in the visual and explain the key changes between stages more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in a sensible sequence, and signposts such as “Once mature,” “Next stage,” and “After that” help the reader follow the process. The opening also gives a useful overview of the start and end points. This provides coherent overall organisation, although the response is written as one continuous block rather than being clearly divided into an introduction/overview and a process description. Some transitions feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “next” and “stage,” while “Furthermore” does not clearly signal the relationship between the evaporation and centrifuging steps. Use paragraphing and a more varied set of precise links, while maintaining the clear chronological progression already established.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the process, with relevant terms such as “harvested,” “crushing,” “purification,” “evaporation,” and “centrifuge.” The writer also attempts more specific process language, including “limestone filter” and “sugar crystals.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “in between machines rollers” is awkward, “moisture evaporates” is not the clearest description of the diagram, and “small crystals” adds an unsupported detail. Spelling errors such as “evaportes” and “centirfuge” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process vocabulary and check spelling, especially for technical terms; this would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “which is done by heat” and a participial opening in “Once mature.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “It is linear process involve 7 stages” needs an article and a correctly formed verb, while “the sugar cane are placed” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “syrup is then pass through a centirfuge to separates,” the verb forms are not controlled, and several sentences run together without appropriate spacing after full stops. Practise accurate articles, agreement, and verb patterns, and proofread sentence boundaries. Greater consistency would improve control while preserving the range attempted.
