How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacture sugar out of sugar cane.

Overall, the whole process consists of seven vital steps. Beginning with growing of sugar cane and ends with the process of drying and cooling the manufactured sugar.

Firstly, sugar cane is grown for 1 to 1.5 years in the field. After that it is cultivated and removed out of the soil, then it is harvested using machinaries and tractors to remove excess part of the stem. Next comes Crushing, sugar cane is passed through the machine consisting two wheels on either side , the obtained sugar cane juice is further to a funnel which consists limestone filter to purify the juice. The next step is evaporation, in which the juice is evaporated in an evaporator which is a large vessel with the continuous supply of heat to convert it into a syrup. After that the process of centrifugation occurs, the sugar crystals are separated from syrup by anticlockwise rotation. The whole process ends with the last step of drying and cooling sugar in large vessel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages and provide a clear overview that the process has seven steps, beginning with cane growing and ending with drying and cooling. The sequence from crushing through purification, evaporation and centrifugation is generally reported accurately, and the growing period is included. However, some details are incomplete or not fully supported by the diagram: harvesting is shown as either mechanical or manual, whereas your account mentions only machinery and tractors. The description of removing excess stem parts and the claim that the centrifuge rotates anticlockwise are not indicated in the visual. The overview could also identify the transformation from cane to juice, syrup and finally sugar. More precise selection of diagram-supported details would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the stages in process order. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After that,” “Next,” and “The next step” help the reader follow the production line, and the final sentence clearly signals its endpoint. This logical progression meets the task well. To show more flexible cohesion, avoid relying so heavily on repeated time markers and group related stages into clearer sections—for example, growing and harvesting, then processing and finishing. Some links within the long middle sentence are also crowded together, making the transition from crushing to juice purification less smooth. Clearer sentence boundaries and more varied referencing would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” and “centrifugation.” These terms help communicate the technical stages, and the meaning is generally clear despite some inaccurate or awkward choices. For example, “manufacture sugar out of sugar cane” is not a natural description, while “machinaries” is an incorrect form. “The obtained sugar cane juice is further to a funnel” is also unclear, and “anticlockwise rotation” adds an unsupported detail. Aim for accurate process collocations and use the diagram’s labels where appropriate, such as “juice passes through a limestone filter” and “the centrifuge separates sugar crystals from syrup.” This would improve precision without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “a machine consisting two wheels” and a purpose clause in “to convert it into a syrup.” The sequence is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening phrase should be “the process of manufacturing sugar,” and “Beginning with growing … and ends” is not a complete, parallel sentence; use “It begins with the growth of sugar cane and ends with drying and cooling.” There are also missing articles or prepositions, as in “consisting two wheels” and “passed through the machine,” and the long sentence beginning “Next comes Crushing” contains several clauses that need clearer punctuation. Check sentence completeness, verb forms and article use while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
