How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the method of the production of the sugar from sugar cane. The report highlights the steps crucial in the manufacture of sugar.

In current trend, the importance of sugar is directly concerned with the consumption of sugar in the society. The method comprise of seven extinsive steps, where each has it's own importance.

To initiate the process, sugar cane is the most important ingrediant which plays a vital role in the production of sugar. The journey begins with the growing of sugar cane. It is a lengthy process, which lasts for 12 to 18 months till the sugar canes gets ready. In the next step, the sugarcanes are harvested by the farmers and the tractors and stored in containers. Then the sugarcanes crushed in the machine and converted in to the juice. Subsequently, the limestone filter is used to purify the juice. After the purification, the juice is heated on the evaporator, where the juice becomes syrup. Further more, the process of centrifuge begins which separates the sugar crystals from the syrup. Eventually, the drying and cooling process of the sugar takes place, after which the sugar becomes ready to dispatch.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main sequence, including the 12–18-month growing period, harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The description of the centrifuge separating crystals from syrup is particularly relevant. However, the overview is not sufficiently focused on the diagram: the comments about sugar’s importance and consumption are not shown, and the claim that the canes are stored in containers is unsupported. The harvesting stage is also less precise than the diagram, which shows two methods—mechanical harvesting and harvesting by hand—rather than farmers and tractors storing the crop. A clearer overview identifying the process as a sequence from growing cane to finished sugar, followed by accurate stage details, would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a generally logical order, moving from an introduction to the growing stage and then through the production process. Sequencing expressions such as “In the next step,” “Subsequently,” and “Eventually” help the reader follow the stages, and the final sentence gives the process a clear endpoint. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement. To show more flexible control, avoid relying on a succession of similar transition phrases and group the stages into clearer paragraphs—for example, growing and harvesting, then processing. The opening paragraph about sugar consumption interrupts the process description because it introduces an idea unrelated to the visual, weakening the progression between the introduction and the stages.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “purify,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “separates,” which allows the stages to be understood. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the production of sugar” and “the manufacture of sugar.” However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “the method of the production” is unnatural, “the most important ingredient” is not a useful description of the diagram, and “ready to dispatch” is not supported by the visual. Spelling errors such as “extinsive” and “ingrediant” also show inconsistent control. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling; for example, describe cane as being “fed into a crusher” rather than saying it is “crushed in the machine.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the relative clause “which lasts for 12 to 18 months” and the clause explaining that the juice “becomes syrup.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The method comprise” has subject–verb disagreement, “the sugar canes gets ready” has incorrect agreement, and “Then the sugarcanes crushed” is missing a passive verb. The sentence “the process of centrifuge begins which separates” also needs clearer clause structure. There are some accurate passive forms, such as “are harvested” and “is used to purify,” so continue using these for process descriptions, while checking agreement, articles, and complete verb phrases in each sentence.
