How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the procedure of obtaining sugar from sugar canes.

Overall, the process consists of seven different steps for converting raw sugar canes into crystals of sugar. The first task which is growing period of product takes more than a year, all other techniques involved in manufacturing procedure take lesser time.

In first place, sugar cane is allowed to grow to attain its full maturity. The second part of the process involves harvesting, which can be done manually or through the help of harvesting truck which saves time and human effort. Then comes the crushing of the sugar cane, the sugar cane is converted into sugar cane juice by the crushing machine. After that, the juice is transported to a flask which possesses the limestone filter. The filter removes the impurities in juice and makes it clean. The fifth step involves the evaporation of clean sugar cane juice, the juice is converted into syrup when it is supplied heat in the evaporator. After that, the syrup is transfered to centrifuge machine, where it is rotated and the centrfugal force separates the crystals of sugar from syrup. Finally, the crystals are kept in container and allowed to cool and dry enough to be supplied to the markets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview that the process has seven stages, with cane growth taking more than a year. The account accurately describes both harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This breadth and generally clear reporting support a strong response to the task. Some details, however, go beyond what the diagram shows: it does not state that the harvester saves time or effort, that the filter removes impurities, or that the finished sugar is cooled “enough to be supplied to the markets.” The overview could also identify the key transformation from cane to juice, syrup, and sugar crystals. Keep explanations closely tied to visible information to make the coverage more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible order, moving from an overview into the stages from growing to the finished sugar. Sequencing expressions such as “In first place,” “Then,” “After that,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are connected into a continuous account. This clear overall progression is a strength. However, the repeated use of “After that” and “Then” makes cohesion somewhat mechanical, and the long body paragraph places many stages together without much visual separation. The overview’s “first task” wording also leads into the detailed account rather abruptly. Use a separate paragraph for the overview and vary transitions with references such as “At the next stage” or “Once the juice has been purified.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “centrifuge,” and “crystals.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and phrases such as “converted into syrup” communicate the main transformation. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a process description: “task” and “techniques” do not fit the stages well, while “flask” and “harvesting truck” are not the clearest labels for the equipment shown. There are also spelling errors in “transfered” and “centrfugal.” Aim for precise process nouns and standard spelling, and avoid adding descriptions that are not supported by the diagram. This would make the vocabulary more flexible and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including relative clauses (“which can be done manually”) and time clauses (“when it is supplied heat”). The sequence remains understandable, but some sentence structures are awkward or inaccurate. For example, “the first task which is growing period of product takes more than a year” has an unclear clause structure, and “when it is supplied heat” needs a different grammatical pattern, such as “when heat is applied.” There are also article and number issues in “the sugar cane” and “the crystals are kept in container,” as well as a tense/form error in “the syrup is transfered.” Review clause construction, articles, and passive forms, and break up long sentences where several stages are joined by commas.
