IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of maufacturing of sugar from sugarcane.
Overall, it is obvious that the process consists of seven stages starting from growing of sugarcane plant to harvesting it and suagrcanes are crushed in machine to extract juice and purify and filter. In addition, the juice is evaported and heated in to make thick syrup and separtates the sugar crystals from syrup, finally dried and cooled to obtain sugar.
Initially, in the first stage sugarcane takes atleast 12 to 18 months for growing. Once, in the second stage is matured it is harvested with the help of machine or a human labour. However, in the third stage the harvested suagr cane is crushed in the machine to extract juice from it and juice is collected in a container. Next, in the fourth stage juice is purified in lime stone filter. Then after the filteration process, the suagr cane juice is heated in a container to evoporates it until it become thick syrup.
In the sixth stage, centrifuge a machine that separates the sugar crystals from the syrup. Finally, in the last stage crystals are dried and cooled to obtain the main product sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview: the process has seven stages, from growing sugar cane to drying and cooling the final sugar. The main operations are also reported, including the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifuging. This is a strong, relevant account of the diagram. A few details could be more precise: the overview says the juice is “purify and filter,” which is repetitive, and the evaporation stage is described as heating the juice “to make thick syrup” without clearly stating that water is removed as it becomes syrup. Also, “Once, in the second stage is matured” makes the transition unclear. More exact descriptions of each stage would strengthen an already complete response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Next,” “Then,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the progression is generally logical. The overview also prepares the reader for the detailed description. However, some links are mechanical or awkward, particularly “Once, in the second stage is matured” and “Then after the filteration process.” The account also moves from the fifth stage to “the sixth stage” without explicitly naming the evaporator as stage five, and the final paragraph is very short. To improve, use transitions that express the actual relationship between steps and keep stage references explicit and consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “container,” “filter,” “evaporates,” and “centrifuge,” so the reader can identify the main operations. There is also some useful variation in referring to the product as “sugar crystals” and “sugar.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “maufacturing,” “suagrcanes,” “evoported,” and “separtates,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “human labour” is less precise than “manual harvesting,” while “lime stone filter” should be “limestone filter.” Phrases such as “takes … for growing” and “main product sugar” are also unnatural. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common process collocations, rather than relying on repeated general words such as “stage” and “machine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the sequence is usually understandable. For example, “Once … it is harvested with the help of machine or a human labour” attempts to connect maturity with harvesting, while the final sentence clearly signals the outcome. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors recur in verb forms, articles and sentence structure. Examples include “sugarcane takes … for growing,” “juice is heated … to evoporates it,” and “until it become thick syrup”; these need forms such as “takes … to grow,” “to evaporate,” and “until it becomes a thick syrup.” The overview also contains an incomplete or poorly joined sequence (“the juice is evaported and heated … and separtates”). Practise forming complete clauses and checking subject–verb agreement and infinitive patterns.
