How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram shows how sugar is produced from sugar cane by following differents steps.

Overall, the diagrams illustrates the process of making sugar from growing sugar canes to final product(sugar). This pictures show sevan different steps.

At first, sugar canes took 12 to 18 months for grown seeds to harvest and it is the longest step plantation to harvesting. After that, when the canes are ready for harvesting can be done by two different methods such as mannual harvesting by labour and automatic by the use of machinery. Mannual harvesting take more time and manpower, while it can be done eassily by harvestor machines.

Furthermore, now sugar canes are transported to sugar mills for further process by squeezing juice from canes in big crushers. In next step juice is not only filtered by a large limestone filter but also pour it into evaporter where all the impurities are discarded and juice become syrup by heating process.

At last, syrup shifted to centrifuge where syrup is going to be crystalize and than process crystal sugar into drying and cooling system.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages in the correct general order, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, filtering, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the process as a sequence ending in sugar. This gives the reader a sound account of the diagram. Some details, however, are unclear or not supported: the canes are not described as grown from seeds, and the diagram does not say that harvesting by hand takes longer or that machinery makes it easier. The explanation of the centrifuge is also imprecise: it separates sugar crystals from syrup rather than crystallising the syrup itself. Keep the overview, but report only visible information and explain the separation more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that move from cultivation and harvesting through processing to the final product. Connectors such as “At first,” “After that,” “Furthermore,” and “At last” help signal progression. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the final paragraph is so compressed that the relationship between centrifuging and drying is difficult to follow. “In next step” also introduces a sentence that combines filtering and evaporation without clearly distinguishing the stages. Use clearer stage-by-stage links, and make sure each paragraph develops one part of the process. More precise references to the juice, syrup, and crystals would also improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushers,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuge,” which helps communicate the subject. There is also some attempt at more specific language, such as “automatic” harvesting and “impurities.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “differents,” “mannual,” “eassily,” “harvestor,” and “evaporter” are inaccurate, while “sugar mills” and “crystalize” do not describe the diagram as precisely as they could. Some phrases are also unnatural, including “syrup shifted to centrifuge.” Build accuracy in spelling and collocation, and choose verbs that describe each stage directly, such as “passes through,” “is heated,” and “separates.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “Mannual harvesting take more time and manpower, while…” and the paired structure “not only filtered…but also pour it into…”. These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent, and several errors make the process harder to follow. Examples include “the diagrams illustrates,” “sugar canes took 12 to 18 months for grown seeds,” and “juice become syrup,” where agreement, verb forms, or sentence construction are faulty. The final sentence also lacks a clear grammatical link between the syrup, centrifuge, and drying stage. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions—for example, “the juice is filtered” and “the syrup is heated”—and check subject–verb agreement and tense consistency.
