IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The rendered diagram depicts the given information about the production process for making sugar from sugarcane.
Overall, it has total seven steps. Besides, it starts with growing in 12-18 months and ends with the drying and cooling of sugar.
Firstly, sugarcane is growing in the period of 12-18 months. In the second step, harvesting is divided into two parts. First one is people harvest the sugarcane with the help of tractor and equipments and another one is by hand. Thereafter, crushing the sugarcane to making a juice. After that, they put the purifying juice into the limestone filter for manufactured sugar.
In case of evaporator, juice is put into heat and it becomes syrup after heating. In the next step, centrifuge the syrup because it separates the sugar crystals from syrup and form sugar very well. In the last step, leave the syrup for drying and cooling and afterwords, sugar is formed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from growing through to drying and cooling, and the overview correctly identifies seven stages, the 12–18-month growing period, and the final stage. Most process details are relevant, including the limestone filter, heating, and the centrifuge’s separation of crystals from syrup. However, some points are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows harvesting by a mechanical harvester or by hand, not people using a tractor, and the purification stage filters the juice rather than directly manufacturing sugar. The final stages are also described as leaving syrup to dry, whereas the diagram shows sugar crystals being dried and cooled. More precise reporting of these distinctions and a clearer account of the output at each stage would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by the stages in sequence. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “Thereafter,” “After that,” and “In the last step” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent progression. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and some transitions do not make the relationship between stages fully clear. For example, “In case of evaporator” is an awkward transition, while “In the next step, centrifuge the syrup” does not clearly connect the syrup’s formation to its separation. Grouping related stages into smoother paragraphs and using clearer references such as “the resulting syrup” would improve cohesion and make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuge.” These terms show awareness of the diagram’s technical stages, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “people harvest … with the help of tractor,” “put the purifying juice into the limestone filter,” and “form sugar very well” do not describe the process naturally. “Equipments” is also not the appropriate form in this context, and “afterwords” is a spelling error for “afterwards.” Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, such as “the cane is fed into a crusher” and “the crystals are separated from the remaining syrup.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the sequence is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms, sentence construction, and articles. For example, “sugarcane is growing” should be “sugarcane grows” or “is grown,” while “crushing the sugarcane to making a juice” is not a complete, correctly formed clause. “First one is people harvest” also combines structures incorrectly; a clearer version would be “The first method is mechanical harvesting.” In “juice is put into heat,” the preposition pattern is faulty. These errors do not generally prevent the reader from understanding the process, but more consistent control of clauses and verb forms is needed. Practise describing stages with accurate passive constructions.
