IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of sugar production by using sugar cane.
Overall, this is a linear process and consists of seven stages. The process starts with growing sugar cane to drying and cooling of sugar for use.
Firslty, sugar canes are planted and it takes 12 to 18 months for them to grow. At the second stage, sugar canes are harvested by using manpower and transferred to the factory for the next step by using tracker. At the next stage, these sugar canes are crushed in a machine and covert into juice. At the fourth stage, this juice is purified by using limestone filter. This filtered juice then placed into evaporator and it converts into syrup by heat.
At the sixth stage, this syrup pass through a process of centrifugation in which sugar crystals are sepearated from syrup. At the final stage, these crystals are placed in a container for drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order and include the key growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, purification, evaporation, separation and final drying and cooling. The overview also identifies a seven-stage linear process, which gives the reader a clear summary. This is a strong account of the diagram, but some details are less fully or precisely reported: the harvesting sentence makes the transfer to the factory sound like a separate transport step, and the final stage is described as crystals being placed in a container rather than sugar being dried and cooled. To strengthen the response further, describe the diagram’s inputs and outputs more exactly, especially that the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup and that the final product is sugar.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and a chronological description, so the reader can follow the process from cultivation to the final stage. Sequencing phrases such as “At the second stage,” “At the next stage” and “At the final stage” support clear progression, and the paragraph break between the overview and details is appropriate. The progression is generally logical, although the repeated use of “At the… stage” makes the linking somewhat formulaic. The harvesting sentence also combines the two methods with a transfer to the factory, which slightly blurs the sequence shown. Vary the transitions and use clearer references to connect each output to the next stage; this would make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on stage labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “purified,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” “centrifugation” and “crystals,” which helps communicate the technical stages. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “using manpower,” “by using tracker” and “placed in a container for drying and cooling.” There are also spelling errors in “Firslty,” “covert” and “sepearated,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, natural process language and check spelling carefully. For example, name the harvesting methods as mechanical and manual, and describe the centrifuge as separating sugar crystals from the remaining syrup. This would make the vocabulary more precise while retaining the relevant technical terms you already use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence and the relative clause “in which sugar crystals are separated from syrup.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “this filtered juice then placed” is missing an auxiliary verb, “this syrup pass” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “it converts into syrup by heat” uses an unclear grammatical construction. The opening overview also has an awkward “starts with… to…” pattern. Use passive forms consistently for a process description, such as “the juice is placed in an evaporator” and “the syrup is heated until it becomes syrup.” More accurate verb forms and sentence patterns would improve control without requiring more complicated structures.
