IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the mnufacturing how process for making sugar and how process work to transfer the sugar in sugar cane.
Overall, it is clear that the process consisys of seven main stages, beginning with growing sugar canes and ending with drying and cooling.
Initially, growing sugar canes for 12 to 18 months. Following this, harvesting the sugar through persons and crane. After that, collected theall harvest put the for the crushing and make a juice. Subsequently, collecting all the juice and purifying by using limestone filter.
In the next stage, ( juice becomes syrup ) evaporator put on the heat. Once this process is completed, after bollling this juice than this juice is transfer the centrifuge ( separtes sugar crystals from syrup ), while all juice ready by using this machine. Finally, the all processed is completed than the juice transfered in a larger container by drying and colling the sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having seven stages and give a relevant overview from growing sugar cane to drying and cooling, which captures the main direction of the diagram. Several key stages are also mentioned, including harvesting, crushing, filtering, evaporation and centrifuging. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “harvesting ... through persons and crane” does not clearly describe the two methods shown, which are manual harvesting and a mechanical harvester. The final stage is also misrepresented as transferring juice into a larger container; the diagram shows sugar being dried and cooled. The explanation of how the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup is not clearly reported. More precise coverage of the stages and their outputs would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall sequence, and expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The overview is separated from the stage-by-stage account, giving the response some organisation. However, progression becomes difficult to follow in several sentences, particularly “After that, collected theall harvest put the for the crushing and make a juice” and the explanation of evaporation and centrifuging. Some linking phrases are used mechanically or redundantly, as in “Once this process is completed, after...” and “Finally... than...”. Organise the stages into clearer sentences, and use links only where they show a genuine relationship between steps. Clearer references to the material being processed would also improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “centrifuge,” and “sugar crystals,” showing an attempt to describe the diagram specifically. However, the range and control are limited, and several word choices or forms make the meaning difficult to understand. For example, “crane” does not accurately name the mechanical harvesting method, while “larger container” is not supported by the diagram. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “mnufacturing,” “consisys,” “separtes,” and “colling.” Repeated use of “juice” and general phrases such as “this process” reduce precision. Build a reliable set of process verbs and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to use sequencing clauses and longer sentence forms, but control is inconsistent, and many sentences contain errors that make the process hard to follow. For instance, “Initially, growing sugar canes for 12 to 18 months” is a fragment without a main verb, while “After that, collected theall harvest put the for the crushing” lacks a clear subject and has an incomplete verb pattern. In “the juice transfered in a larger container,” the passive construction is not formed correctly. Tense and clause structure also break down in “Once this process is completed, after bollling this juice than...”. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and accurate passive forms, such as “The juice is heated” and “The crystals are separated.”
