How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the information about how sugar is produced from sugar cane. Overall, it consists of 7 step starts from growing sugar cane plants and ends after producing sugar.

The first step begins with planting sugar canes for 12-18 months. After that long period of time, it then ready to harvest. Some people prefer to use hand to cut sugar cane trees. Other prefer to use modern devices to harvest those trees.

The process continues, then it is ready to crushed and to make juice. The juice needs to purify using limestone filter. To make syrup from that juice, it needs to evaporate. Therefore, the heating method is useful to evaporate and make syrup afterward. To make sugar, that syrup needs to divide into 2 parts which is sugar syrup and sugar crystals. At the end of the process, it needs to dry and let them cool for sometime before packed as a sugar. This is how the process of making sugar works.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from growing the cane through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, separation and final drying. The overview identifies seven stages and gives the process’s start and end, while details such as the 12–18-month growing period and the two harvesting methods are accurately reported. This meets the task well, with some features described less fully: for example, the centrifuge’s role in separating crystals from syrup is mentioned, but the final product of that separation is not explained clearly. The diagram also shows limestone filtering and heating, which you include. To make the account more complete, state explicitly that the crystals are dried and cooled to produce sugar, and avoid adding unsupported details such as packing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the diagram’s sequence, and phrases such as “After that,” “The process continues,” and “At the end” help readers track the stages. The opening overview also gives the reader a useful framework. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “the process” and “it,” whose referents are not always clear. The sentence beginning “To make sugar, that syrup needs to divide into 2 parts” introduces the separation stage, but the relationship between the syrup and the two resulting materials could be expressed more clearly. Organise the stages into clearer paragraphs—for example, cultivation and harvesting, then processing—and use precise links between each stage to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “crushed,” “limestone filter,” “evaporate,” “syrup,” and “sugar crystals.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and the response generally communicates the intended meaning. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “modern devices” is vague for the mechanical harvester, “sugar cane trees” is not the appropriate term, and “divide into 2 parts” does not describe separation naturally. “Packed as a sugar” is also unclear and adds a detail not shown in the diagram. Choose specific process terms such as “mechanical harvester,” “cane,” and “separate,” and use natural collocations such as “dry and cool the crystals.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including “After that long period of time” and the purpose clause “To make syrup from that juice.” The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. Several verb forms and sentence patterns need correction: “it then ready to harvest” requires a verb (“it is then ready”), “it is ready to crushed” should be “ready to be crushed,” and “the juice needs to purify” should be “the juice needs to be purified.” There are also agreement and article problems in “Other prefer” and “which is sugar syrup and sugar crystals.” Aim for consistent passive constructions when describing a process, and check subject–verb agreement and articles. This would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence forms.
