How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the process of sugar made from sugar cane. There are 7 main stages in the process, starting with the growing of sugar for at least 12-18 months and ending with drying and cooling from which we get sugar in crystal form.

Overall, it is a linear natural process that involves machines, chemicals centrifuges that seperates sugar crystals from syrup an results in sugar from the drying and cooling process.

Initially, sugar cane is collected from feilds after its complete growth for upto 12-18 months and then harvested to sent it to the sugar factory where sugar canes are crushed to become juice and the juice is purified by limestone filter process. And then it is heated by a evaporator, juice becomes syrup.

Subsequently, in the next stage, crystals seperates from syrup by centrifuge proccess. Finally, after drying and cooling process sugar is released and ready for consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having seven stages and give a clear start and finish: cane grows for 12–18 months, and the final steps are drying and cooling to produce sugar crystals. You also cover the main sequence from harvesting through crushing, purification, evaporation and centrifuging. However, some details are less fully or precisely reported. The overview calls the process “natural,” although the diagram shows substantial mechanical processing, and “chemicals” is not supported by the visual; limestone is shown as a filter. The two harvesting methods are omitted, as is the fact that the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup. Make the overview more accurate and include these distinguishing features to report the process more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “And then,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are presented in the correct order. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some of the clearer progression associated with stronger organisation. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, particularly with repeated “and then” transitions, and the overview’s reference to “machines, chemicals centrifuges” makes the relationship between ideas unclear. The final paragraph also runs several stages together. Use more varied, precise links and group related stages into clearer sentences so the progression feels smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which allows you to describe the main stages. There is some attempt at more specific terminology, but the range and control are limited by inaccurate or awkward choices such as “sugar made from sugar cane,” “natural process,” and “sugar is released.” Several spelling errors—“seperates,” “feilds,” and “proccess”—also reduce accuracy. Choose precise process collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe sugar as being “produced,” and say that crystals are “separated from the syrup.” This would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “from which we get sugar” and a sequence of linked process clauses. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “starting with the growing of sugar” has an inaccurate noun choice within the structure, while “then harvested to sent it” has an incorrect verb pattern. In “crystals seperates,” the plural subject requires a plural verb, and “by a evaporator” uses the wrong article. Punctuation is also missing after “proccess.” Aim for more controlled passive forms, such as “the canes are harvested” and “the juice is heated,” and proofread articles, agreement and sentence boundaries.
