The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process diagram takes seven steps to produced sugar from sugar cane.
Overall it evident that the process diagram shows, firsty growing sugar cane aprox 12 to 18 months and more several things doing. to last step drying and cooling sugar and main feature is crushing.
Firsh, we have growing sugar cane in our lands approx 12 to 18 months it is very long period,Secondly we harvesting growing sugar cane by self or use heavy machinery to cut growing sugar cane, In the third stage crushing the sugar cane to produce a juicy form and purifying the jiuce in limestone filter and evaporate the juice and find new condition becomes syrup.
last two stages we are seprates sugar crystals from syrup thats the main intresting stage of making sugar, rather than seprates sugar so its enter his last stage , so the final step is drying and cooling the sugar, we done all seven satges to eligible to produced sugar from sugar cane.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having seven stages and include several key features: the growing period of 12–18 months, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, separation, and final drying and cooling. This gives the reader a broadly accurate account of the sequence. However, the overview is unclear and does not effectively summarise the process as a whole; calling crushing the “main feature” is not a meaningful overview of this diagram. Some stages are also only briefly or confusingly described, particularly the centrifuge stage and how the sugar crystals are obtained. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the linear process and explain the transformation from cane to juice, syrup, crystals, and finished sugar more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows the general order of the diagram, and phrases such as “In the third stage” and “the final step” help signal sequence. The paragraphing also separates an attempted overview from the stage-by-stage account. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and awkward transitions, especially “last two stages we are seprates…” and “rather than seprates sugar so its enter his last stage.” Several stages are crowded into one long sentence, making the sequence difficult to follow. The overview itself is hard to distinguish from the details that follow. Use one concise overview paragraph, then group the stages into clear chronological sections, with accurate connectors such as “Next,” “After filtration,” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” and “sugar crystals,” so the reader can recognise the main stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description difficult to understand. For example, “juicy form” is not a natural way to describe the liquid extracted from cane, while “new condition” does not clearly express the change into syrup. Spelling errors such as “aprox,” “seprates,” and “satges” are also noticeable. Build a more precise set of process terms and check spelling; use “juice,” “is converted into,” and “separates” in their appropriate contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both a summary and longer sentences describing several stages, but grammatical control is inconsistent, and many sentences contain errors that make relationships between ideas unclear. For instance, “The process diagram takes seven steps to produced” has an incorrect verb form, and “Overall it evident” is missing a verb. The sentence beginning “Firsh, we have growing…” also has problems with tense, articles, and sentence boundaries. Most descriptions rely on simple or loosely joined clauses rather than controlled complex structures. Practise using accurate passive forms for processes, such as “the cane is harvested” and “the juice is heated,” and check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation when editing.
