IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the information about how sugar is produced from sugar cane. In this process there are seven steps to made sugar.
It is clearly seen from the given diagram that in first step, sugar canes are grown for 12 to 18 months. In the second step, they are harvested by two methods such as, by machine and by hand. In the third step, all the sugar canes are crushed into machine and produced juice. After that, juice is purified with the help of limestone filter.
Moreover, in the next step, juice is burned on high flame of heat when it is evaporated then it becomes converted into syrup. In addtion, it puts on centrifuged it helps to separated sugar crystals from syrup. Last but not a least, sugar are dryed and cooled for some time then its ready.
Overall, the manufactured process for maked sugar from sugar cane are prepared by seven methods. Sugarcane are grown, harvested, crushed in machine then purified, evaporates and separated there sugar crystal then dryed and cooled.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of the process. The overview is present, but it repeats the sequence rather than clearly summarising the process as a whole—for example, you could state that sugar cane is transformed from a crop into sugar through a series of mechanical and treatment stages. Some details are unclear or imprecise: “burned on high flame” does not accurately describe heating in an evaporator, and “then its ready” adds a claim not shown in the diagram. Clarifying these points would make the account more precise and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it follows the diagram from growing through to the final drying and cooling stage, and uses signposts such as “In the second step,” “After that,” and “Moreover.” The sequence is therefore easy to follow. However, the linking is sometimes mechanical, with repeated step-by-step transitions, and the final paragraph largely restates information already given rather than adding a distinct overview. Some connections are also awkward, such as “In addition, it puts on centrifuged,” which makes the relationship between evaporation and separation difficult to follow. Use clearer paragraph roles—an introduction and concise overview followed by the stages—and vary transitions while making each reference explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” and “sugar crystals,” which helps communicate the diagram’s main stages. There is also some attempt to use more specific language, such as “centrifuged.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “burned on high flame of heat,” “puts on centrifuged,” “dryed,” and “manufactured process” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Repetition of “step” and “sugar cane” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise process vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; for example, describe juice as being heated and concentrated, then say that a centrifuge separates the crystals from the syrup.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate the sequence using both simple statements and some longer structures, including “when it is evaporated then it becomes converted into syrup.” The main stages remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “there are seven steps to made sugar,” “it helps to separated,” and “sugar are dryed and cooled,” where verb forms or subject–verb agreement are incorrect. The final sentence also has a faulty structure: “Sugarcane are grown … then purified, evaporates and separated there sugar crystal.” Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, as in “step, they.” Practise accurate passive forms for processes—such as “the cane is crushed” and “the juice is heated”—and check agreement and verb forms in each sentence.
