IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram emphasizes the process of manufacturing of sugar. It illustrates the way in which sugar produced from sugar cane.
The process of sugar manufacturing consists of seven steps. These steps sequentially show the whole process of sugar production. All important steps in this production are explained in lined way.
The procedure of sugar refining starts from sugar cane. Sugar cane is the basic raw material for sugar which grows for 12 to 18 months. In second step, sugar cane is harvested either by hand or by the use of machinery. Sugar cane is crushed after harvesting in order to produce juice, it is done in third step. Explaining the fourth meausre taken to extract sugar, juice is purified after passing through the filter, named limestone filter.
Fifth effort in this process is carried out by heating the juice in evaporator just to make syrup. Syrup is centrifuged in sixth step, in which sugar crystals are separated from syrup. Seventh and last step is to dry and cool the sugar crystals and now sugar is ready to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main sequence and include several accurate details, such as the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, and centrifuging. The overview identifies seven steps, but it mainly repeats that the process is sequential rather than summarising its key transformation from cane to extracted and dried sugar. Some details are also imprecise: the diagram shows sugar crystals being separated from syrup and then dried and cooled, whereas “now sugar is ready to use” adds an outcome not shown. The opening sentence also says sugar is produced from cane without clearly stating the process’s overall stages. A stronger overview and more precise reporting of the final stages would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a generally logical order: an introduction, a brief overview, and then a description moving from growing through to drying and cooling. Sequencing expressions such as “In second step,” “third step,” and “Seventh and last step” help the reader follow the process. However, the overview paragraph is repetitive, since “seven steps,” “sequentially,” and “whole process” convey much the same point. Some transitions are also mechanical, particularly the repeated step-number framing, and the opening of the fourth-stage sentence (“Explaining the fourth measure…”) interrupts the flow. Grouping the stages into clearer phases and using more natural links between them would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuged,” which allows you to describe the diagram clearly. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “raw material” and “procedure.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “manufacturing of sugar” is less idiomatic than “sugar production,” and “in lined way” does not clearly express the intended meaning. “Fifth effort” is also an unsuitable collocation for a process stage, while “ready to use” is not supported by the diagram. Choose precise process terms and avoid formal-sounding phrases when their meaning or collocation is uncertain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the passive construction “sugar is harvested” and the clause “in which sugar crystals are separated from syrup.” The sequence is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the way in which sugar produced” is missing the auxiliary “is,” and “The process … consists of seven steps” is followed by the awkward construction “These steps sequentially show.” The sentence beginning “Sugar cane is crushed after harvesting” joins two independent ideas with a comma, and “in second step” needs an article. Review passive verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while keeping the useful range of structures you have attempted.
