IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the seven stages of industrial and mechanical manufacturing process for producing sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, the process is mostly industrial where in most stages machinery involves after being harvested. This linear process involves crushing, purifying, evaporating and drying to get a sugar.
To begin with, firstly the sugar canes are grown in the farms. The seeds are sowed and growing process almost take around 12-18 months to finally ready for harvesting. The sugar cane can be harvested through big machinery or by the farmers. After collecting the sugar canes they are being crushed by processing it into crushing machine at the result the juice came out.
In next stage, the juice need to purify by limestone filter. After filtering the juice, it gets heated in certain degree to get syrup after evaporation. The main stage where crystal being separated from syrup is centrifuge. At the final stage the sugar crystals need to get dry and cool it and the final sugar is ready to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence and give a clear overview that the process is linear and involves several mechanical stages. The account correctly includes the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This is a solid, relevant response, but some details are less fully or precisely reported: for example, the diagram shows juice becoming syrup in the evaporator and the centrifuge separating sugar crystals from syrup, while your description of these stages is brief. The claim that seeds are sown is not shown in the diagram, and “industrial and mechanical manufacturing” is somewhat imprecise. More exact reporting of the transformations and a concise overview of the start and end products would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move from cultivation and harvesting through to the final product. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “After collecting,” and “At the final stage” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account coherent overall progression. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “To begin with, firstly” repeats the same function, and “In next stage” does not form a natural transition. The overview also lists several stages without connecting them smoothly. Use a wider range of concise transitions and clearer references between stages, while keeping the chronological structure that already works well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushing machine,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge.” These terms make the stages generally understandable, and some choices are appropriately specific to the diagram. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural collocations, such as “machinery involves,” “at the result,” and “get dry and cool it.” “Industrial and mechanical manufacturing process” is also redundant and less natural than a direct description of sugar production. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Aim for standard process collocations such as “machinery is used,” “as a result,” and “the crystals are dried and cooled.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence and the sequence “After filtering the juice, it gets heated … to get syrup.” The stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the seeds are sowed and growing process almost take” has problems with verb form, agreement, and article use; “the juice need to purify” lacks the appropriate passive construction; and “the final sugar is ready to use” needs a different grammatical pattern. There are also awkward sentence boundaries in “they are being crushed by processing it into crushing machine at the result the juice came out.” Work on consistent passive forms for process descriptions, subject–verb agreement, and sentence punctuation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your range clearer.
