IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrate the process of manufacturing sugar from sugar cane.
It is clear that there are seven different process of extracting sugar from sugar cane. The manufacturing process begins with growing sugar canes in field and ends with drying and cooling the produced sugar.
Looking at the diagram in more detail, the manufacturing process starts with growing sugar canes in field and cultivate them around 12 to 18 months in field. After 18 months, farmer harvest sugar canes from farmland by himself or using a harvesting machine. In the following process, harvested canes put into a juice maker machine and extract liquid and then purify them by a limestone fillter.
For the remaining stages, it is also noticeable that a evaporator machine being used for boiling juice and becomes syrup by giving heat. Before the last stage, a centrifuge is used to separates sugar crystals from syrup. At the last stage, a container is used to dry and cool the produced sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having seven stages and give a clear overall summary: it begins with growing sugar cane and ends with drying and cooling the sugar. The main sequence is mostly accurate, including harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation and centrifuging. However, some stages are described less fully or imprecisely. For example, the diagram shows cane being crushed to produce juice, but “juice maker machine” does not clearly report the crushing stage. The centrifuge’s role in separating sugar crystals from syrup is included, while the limestone filter and the heating that turns juice into syrup are also noted. To strengthen the response, describe each stage using the diagram’s specific function and avoid adding details such as farmers harvesting “after 18 months,” since the growing period is given as 12–18 months.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move through the process in sequence. Linking phrases such as “In the following process,” “For the remaining stages,” and “At the last stage” help guide the reader, and the progression is easy to follow. This shows effective organisation, though some connections are a little mechanical and the paragraphing could group stages more precisely. For instance, the second body paragraph covers growing through purification, while the final paragraph handles the remaining stages; clearer grouping around the initial and later production phases would improve flow. Some references, such as “them” in “purify them,” are not fully clear because the material being purified is juice, not the canes.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “limestone,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “sugar crystals.” These terms help communicate the stages, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “juice maker machine” is not the natural name for the crushing equipment, “limestone fillter” contains a spelling error, and “cultivate them” does not clearly express the growing stage. “Giving heat” is understandable but less idiomatic than describing the juice as being heated. Aim to use concise, accurate process terms and check spelling, especially for technical vocabulary. This would make the description more precise without requiring a much wider vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “The manufacturing process begins…” and the sequence introduced by “Before the last stage.” The stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, and “there are seven different process” needs a plural noun. Articles and verb forms also need attention in “a evaporator machine being used” and “a centrifuge is used to separates.” In addition, “harvested canes put into” is missing a passive verb form. Practise accurate passive constructions for process descriptions, such as “the canes are crushed” and “the juice is heated,” while checking articles and agreement.
