IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of sugar manufacturing from suagar cane.
It is clear that the topic consists of seven different stages and a number of different tools and infrasturctures, from the growing of sugar cane to the production of final sugar product.
At the first stage of process, sugar cane is planted and it is grown for 12-18 months to mature fully. After the growing period, they are harvested eiher manually by a labour or by the using of harvester. Then these are taken to be crushed in a machine and juice is extraxted from sugar cane.
In the following stage, the juice is purified by the using of limestone filter to improve its quality. Then in the 5th stage, juices are taken to the oven and it becomes syrup by evaporation. After that, separation of sugar crystals from syrup are done by centrifugal machinr. Finally, sugar are taken for drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the full sequence and include key details such as the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies seven stages and the movement from cane to finished sugar, giving the response a clear sense of the process. Some descriptions are less precise than the diagram: the cane is harvested rather than explicitly described as being planted, and the evaporator is called an “oven.” The final stage is mentioned but not explained beyond its name. To strengthen the account, describe the main transformations more explicitly—for example, juice becomes syrup, and the centrifuge separates sugar crystals from the remaining syrup—while keeping the overview distinct from the stage-by-stage details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in a logical order, and sequencing phrases such as “At the first stage,” “After,” “Then,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The opening overview also gives the response a useful structure. However, the writing is arranged as one continuous block, so the overview and process details are not clearly separated into paragraphs. Some linking is mechanical, with several sentences beginning “Then” or “After,” and references such as “these” and “they” are not always precise about whether they refer to the cane or the juice. Use a separate overview paragraph, group the stages into logical phases, and vary transitions while naming the material being described when a pronoun could be unclear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporation,” and “centrifugal,” which allows the reader to understand the main operations. There is also some attempt at more specific terminology, such as “limestone filter” and “sugar crystals.” However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “oven” is not the diagram’s term for the evaporator, “infrasturctures” is an unsuitable description of the equipment, and “suagar,” “eiher,” “extraxted,” and “machinr” are misspelled. Phrases such as “by the using of” are also awkward. Choose accurate process nouns and verbs, check spelling carefully, and prefer concise collocations such as “using a harvester” and “the juice is evaporated.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts at more complex structures, such as “After the growing period, they are harvested…” and “the juice is purified… to improve its quality.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “separation … are done” has a singular subject with a plural verb, while “sugar are taken” also has incorrect agreement. “It becomes syrup” shifts awkwardly from plural “juices” to a singular pronoun, and “by the using of” shows an inaccurate grammatical pattern. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “the production of final sugar product.” Practise subject–verb agreement, consistent singular or plural reference, and article use; then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
