IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This process illustrates the development procedure of creating sweet with the aid of sugar can.
Overall, we can observe that the whole process is divided into the seven stages. Which started with the fertilization of the sugar can seeds and will be resulted in form of hard sugar.
Moreover, seeds can take up to one and half year for its proper growth. Afterwards, farmers harvest it whether with their own hands or with the assistance of harvesting machine. Subsequently, these sugar canes crushed with machine to produce liquid form of it. Then they use limestone filter to remove dangerous substances from it and getting its pure form.
Furthermore, they use the evaporator to convert it into the syrup with the aid of flamming heat.Consectively, sugar crystals started producing in the centrifuge then simply separates solid crystals of sugar from it. Consequently, after drying and cooling it you will be successfully get the hard form of sugar which you can use in your daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers the main stages in the correct general order, from growing and harvesting through crushing, filtering, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. It also includes the key growth period and both harvesting methods, and the overview identifies a seven-stage process with a final sugar product. These details make the account relevant and broadly complete. However, some descriptions are inaccurate or imprecise: the diagram shows sugar cane being grown, not seeds being fertilised, and the final product is simply sugar rather than specifically “hard sugar.” The explanation of purification and centrifuging is also somewhat general. For a stronger response, report only what the diagram shows and describe the separation of crystals from syrup more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that follow the process from cultivation to the finished product. Sequencing expressions such as “Afterwards,” “Subsequently,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the stages, and the overall progression is clear. This is a solid organisational foundation. However, the linking is sometimes mechanical, with several transitions placed at the start of successive sentences, and the overview’s sentence beginning “Which started…” is an incomplete fragment that interrupts the flow. Some references, such as “it” and “from it,” are also unclear because the reader must infer whether they refer to cane, juice, or syrup. Use fewer, more varied transitions and make references explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “crystals,” so the reader can identify most stages. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “convert” and “produce.” However, noticeable word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “creating sweet with the aid of sugar can” is unnatural, “fertilization of the sugar can seeds” misrepresents the growing stage, and “flamming heat” is not an appropriate description. “Hard form of sugar” is also an awkward substitute for the diagram’s final product. Prefer standard process terms and accurate collocations, such as “sugar cane is cultivated” and “heat evaporates the juice into syrup.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including clauses introduced by “whether” and “after,” and the sequence is generally understandable. However, grammatical errors are frequent, and some attempted structures are faulty. For example, “Which started with…” is a sentence fragment, while “these sugar canes crushed with machine” lacks an auxiliary verb and article. The construction “it you will be successfully get” is also grammatically incorrect, and “sugar crystals started producing” does not form the intended passive structure. Tense and agreement are not consistently controlled. Practise complete sentences and use passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the cane is crushed” and “the crystals are separated.”
