How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram displays how sugar can be manufactured by passing sugarcane from different procedures.

Overall, there are a total of seven stages. Notably, the most paramount stages are growing and purifying them. Growth of sugercane takes plenty of time. After completion, when the sugar is abstracted, it is set for drying and cooling.

Initially, the sugercanes are grow in a field and the growth takes approximately 12 to 18 months to make them mature. Then the process of harvesting comes in which a professional man harvests and puts them into a truck. Furthermore, a machine is specially made for crushing. It squeezes every single sugarcane and make juice. In the following step, the juice is purified by passing through a limestone filter. It is evaporated then, and the juice transformed into syrup by heating. In the second last process, a machine separates sugar crystal from syrup this process is called "Centrifugation". At the end, sugar is put in a cylindrical container for drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full sequence and include the key timing detail that sugar cane grows for 12 to 18 months. The overview also identifies seven stages and signals the beginning and end of the process. However, the claim that growing and purifying are the “most paramount” stages is not a meaningful comparison supported by the diagram. Some details are also inaccurate or added: harvesting is shown as either mechanical or by hand, not as a professional man putting cane into a truck, and the final sugar is shown in a cylinder during drying and cooling, rather than being put there afterwards. To strengthen the response, give a more informative overview of the transformation from cane to juice, syrup and sugar, and report both harvesting methods accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall order, moving from cultivation through processing to the finished sugar, and paragraphing separates the overview from the stage-by-stage account. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Then,” “In the following step,” and “At the end” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account coherent progression, though the linking is somewhat formulaic. Some connections are less clear: “After completion, when the sugar is abstracted” does not clearly identify which stage has been completed, and “It is evaporated then” makes the reference to “it” slightly awkward. Use more precise references and vary the transitions, while keeping the stages in the diagram’s order.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” and “centrifugation,” which makes the main operations understandable. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “abstracted” and “paramount,” but these are not natural choices in this context; “extracted” and “key” would be more suitable. “Professional man” is an imprecise description of one harvesting method, and “sugar crystal” would be more accurate as “sugar crystals.” Spelling slips such as “suger cane” and “suger canes” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional process language rather than elevated words that do not fit the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a machine … which squeezes” and a passive construction in “the juice is purified.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “the sugercanes are grow” needs the passive form “are grown,” while “it squeezes … and make juice” requires “makes.” The sentence “It is evaporated then, and the juice transformed into syrup” also needs a clearer structure, such as “It is then heated in an evaporator, transforming the juice into syrup.” Check verb forms, agreement and sentence construction, especially when combining two process actions.
