Student answer (Band 4.5)

Dear Nidhi,

I hope you are doing well. I am delighted to hear that you want to learn a new sport, I am glad to give you suggestion on which one would suit you best.

I would recommend you for the badminton, because it is a perfect fit for you and easy to learn. In addition, it is a good way to improve your hand-eye coordination and keeps you physically active and enjoyable. Moreover, you don’t need extremely high level of fitness in starting.

The easiest way to learn this sport would be enroll to local badminton club and take a few sessions with badminton coach. They could introduce with basic technique, different strokes and also hand and footwork. Once you familiar with these techniques, you could practice with others players and after that you can gain confidence easily.

Actually, I am fascinated to enroll badminton club. So, we could join the same club and classes together. It would be enjoyable and we can motivate each other during practice. I am sure it would be great to spend some quality time together and improve our fitness together.

Hopefully, we can get started soon. I am looking forward to playing with you soon.

Best wishes,

Divya Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an essay regarding the future of cash payments, but you have written a personal letter to a friend about joining a badminton club. Because you have failed to address the task instructions entirely, the score is severely impacted. Additionally, the response is only 206 words, failing to meet the minimum 250-word requirement. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your response directly answers the specific questions asked in the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

Although the response is off-topic, it is structured as a letter with clear paragraphing. There is a logical flow within the context of the letter, using basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Actually'. However, because the content does not relate to the task, the overall coherence in terms of fulfilling the prompt is non-existent. The progression of ideas is simple but follows a standard informal letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, suitable for a basic informal letter. You use some relevant terms like 'hand-eye coordination', 'physically active', and 'techniques', but there is a lack of sophisticated or precise language. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'recommend you for the badminton' (should be 'recommend badminton') and 'introduce with basic technique' (should be 'introduce you to basic techniques').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammar shows a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentences. There are frequent errors, such as 'enroll to local badminton club' (should be 'enroll in a local badminton club') and 'Once you familiar with these' (missing the verb 'are'). While these errors do not always impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of control over basic sentence structure and article usage. A wider range of error-free complex structures is needed for a higher band.
