Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position on the future of cash and why some people might hesitate to give it up. The main ideas are relevant and generally easy to follow, but there is some imbalance in development. For instance, the reasons supporting why cash might disappear, such as technological advancements and cashback incentives, are expanded with examples like spending fifty dollars monthly. However, the reasons why some people prefer cash are slightly under-developed and lack the same depth of elaboration, touching briefly on security concerns and privacy. To reach the next level, all parts of the prompt would need to be equally well-extended and thoroughly supported throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing the shift away from cash and the counter-arguments, followed by a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty due to repetitive transitional phrases and occasional awkward referencing, such as in the opening sentences where ideas are tied together loosely. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, smoother and more varied cohesive devices are needed to guide the reader seamlessly between arguments without relying on repetitive structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary to complete the task comfortably, incorporating some less common terms and topic-specific language such as 'technological era', 'cashback', and 'vendor'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the response, such as writing 'most of payment' instead of 'most payments' and 'lost control' instead of 'losing control'. Additionally, there are minor spelling slips like 'cachback' and 'misteke'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a level of vocabulary control that falls short of higher bands, which require greater precision and fewer lexical errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'there are development' and 'the bank are having', incorrect verb forms such as 'where you doesn't need', missing articles, and awkward prepositional usage within grammatical patterns. While the meaning remains mostly clear despite these lapses, the presence of frequent grammatical inaccuracies places the structural control firmly in the lower-intermediate range.
