IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future, people may no longer be able to pay for things in shops using cash. All payments may have to be made by card or using phones. Do you think this will happen one day? Why do you think some people might not be happy to give up using cash?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is predicted by some individuals that in the future online only cashless transactions will be accepted by businesses. In the following paragrahs, I will discuss why this will happen, and the reasons why many are not in the favour of this transition.

The main reason why I strongly believe that cash money will be disappeared is techonological adavancements. Currently the majority of individuals are using applications such as apple pay and google pay to pay their daily expenses. This allows them to make payments without carrying cash. Moreover, it also resolve the issue of deposit cash in bank lockers, especially for shops and local grocery stores. For instance, for local shop owners it is easy to directly receive money in thier bank accounts rather than collecting cash from their customers and deposit physical money in banks. Therefore, in the upcoming decades, I think that cards and mobiles will replace cash completely.

However, it might be challenging for few people, particularly for elderly generation, because they are not tech-friendly. They might feel difficulties in operating mobile phones and using credit or debit cards. Furthermore, due to a lack of experience in operating cards and digital payment menthods, they may feel sense of insecurity. This is because old people might show low interest in using this advanced technology. For example, senior citizens may feel more confident while paying bills in cash than credit cars, as they are using this method from last decades. Due to these old-style methods, some people may resist to give up using physical money.

To conclude, I believe that in the future digital money will replicate cash payments because of its high use. Despite its benefits, oldage people might prefer cash money over cards and banking applications.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you expect cash to be replaced, mainly because digital payments are increasingly used, and you explain why older people may resist. The examples about shop owners receiving money directly and senior citizens feeling more confident with cash help address both parts of the question. This meets the task well, but the explanation of why cashless payment will become universal is less fully developed than the discussion of older people’s concerns. For instance, the claim that digital money will replace cash “completely” is asserted rather than supported with consideration of barriers or a specific example of wider adoption. To strengthen the response further, develop this prediction and explain more precisely why the transition is likely, while maintaining your clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a paragraph supporting the prediction, a paragraph on resistance, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “To conclude” make the relationship between sections easy to follow, and each body paragraph has a distinct focus. This is a strong, logical arrangement. Some connections within paragraphs are less smooth, however: “This allows them” refers broadly to individuals, while the following point shifts to shop owners without a clear transition. The repeated use of “This is because” and “Therefore” also makes some links feel formulaic. Use more precise referencing and vary how you connect explanations and examples to make the progression more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “cashless transactions,” “digital payment methods,” “deposit,” and “insecurity,” so the main ideas are generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “local shop owners” and “senior citizens.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “paragrahs,” “techonological,” “adavancements,” “menthods,” and “thier” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “cash money,” “not in the favour of this transition,” and “oldage people.” These issues fit a limited but adequate range with noticeable inaccuracies. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations for payments and people’s attitudes, rather than relying on repeated general terms such as “cash” and “people.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because they are not tech-friendly”) and a comparison introduced by “rather than.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraph structure helps the reader follow your argument. Some grammatical errors remain, though. For example, “cash money will be disappeared” uses an incorrect passive form; “it also resolve” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “they may feel sense of insecurity” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “For example” also has an unclear comparison structure. Review verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation around transitions such as “Furthermore,”. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
