Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Collins,

I hope you are doing well. Thank you very much for inviting me to chari's surprise birthday party. I think he will really enjoy this celebrastion because he loves spending time with his friends and family. Moreover, he wiill be very happy to see everyone together, especially when he is not expecting it.

U nfortunately, I am sorry to say that I will not be able to attend the party because I have an important work commitment on that day. I have already promised my manager that I will complete an urgent task, so I cannot change my schedule.

However, I would love to meet chris on another day. I am planning to visit favourite restaurant for dinner and spend some quality time together. I would also like to giver him a birthday present personally.

Please give my best wishes to chris and tell him that I am sorry for missing his special day.

Best wishes,

Monu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a polite, appropriate tone. You explain why Chris would enjoy the gathering by noting that he likes time with friends and family, and you give a clear reason for your absence: an urgent work commitment already promised to your manager. You also propose meeting for dinner and giving him a present in person. These ideas are relevant and clear, though the alternative plan is less fully developed: “my favourite restaurant” is not named, and no date or specific arrangement is offered. The explanation of Chris’s likely enjoyment is also somewhat general. Adding a concrete detail to each plan would make the ideas more fully extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is organised in a clear sequence: you thank the parents and explain the party’s appeal, give your reason for declining, then suggest another meeting and close with birthday wishes. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Unfortunately,” and “However” help signal the relationships between ideas. The letter is easy to follow throughout. To make the organisation even more polished, ensure the greeting addresses both parents as instructed, and connect the proposed dinner more explicitly to a practical arrangement, such as suggesting a day. The transitions are generally effective, although the ideas within the final paragraph could be linked more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly invitation response, including “surprise birthday party,” “work commitment,” “urgent task,” and “quality time.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the tone is suitably warm. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “celebrastion,” “wiill,” “chari,” and “giver.” The phrase “visit favourite restaurant” is also not quite natural, and “important work commitment” could be expressed more specifically. Aim to check spelling carefully and use natural collocations; for example, say “go to my favourite restaurant” and “give him a present.” This would make the vocabulary more accurate and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and several sentences are grammatically clear, such as “I have already promised my manager that I will complete an urgent task.” The reason for your absence is expressed with a well-formed subordinate clause, and the overall meaning remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I am planning to visit favourite restaurant,” a determiner is needed (“my favourite restaurant” or “a favourite restaurant”). The greeting names only Mr Collins rather than both parents, and capitalisation of “Chris” should be consistent. There is also an isolated spacing and punctuation problem in “U nfortunately.” Proofreading articles, names, and sentence presentation would improve accuracy.
