Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why Chris would enjoy the party, provided a clear reason for your absence, and outlined a concrete plan to meet him later. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents, maintaining a polite and appreciative register throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your intentions. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are developed with slightly more detail, such as elaborating on why the specific restaurant is a good choice for his birthday celebration.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'I hope' to transition between ideas. While the structure is clear, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is consistent. For instance, the transition between the apology for missing the party and the alternative plan is clear, but the overall progression could be smoother with more sophisticated cohesive markers to connect the sentences within paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully conveying your message. You use some appropriate phrases like 'kind invitation' and 'memorable'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'surprised party' instead of 'surprise party' and 'cannot be miss it' instead of 'cannot miss it'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would also enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('he love', 'he get') and tense inconsistencies ('i already planned', 'i already purchased'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the inconsistent use of 'i' instead of 'I'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will help improve your score significantly.
