Student answer (Band 6.5)

TASK 1

Dear Mr and Mrs. Collins,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am unable to attend the birthday party of my friend, Chris.

However, I am pretty sure that Chris will enjoy a surprise party that would organised by her parents because she loves to spend time with family and friend and have fun together.

I feel apologise to you because I cannot come to the party. Actually, I have a exam on a the same day of the party. It is a important exam that cannot miss because it tells my future.

I have plan to meet chris on another day and wish her. Also, I would give her dress that selected by her in shopping mall last week. I hope you will free on next day of the party at 1pm.

I am looking looking to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Komal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining why Chris will enjoy the party, stating the reason for your absence, and proposing an alternative meeting time. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation for the absence is brief, and the plan to meet is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detail and elaboration for each point to ensure the reader feels fully informed and engaged.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'Actually' to link your sentences. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical phrasing, and some transitions feel a bit repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. The overall structure is sound, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated to improve the readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant phrases like 'inform you' and 'surprise party'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I feel apologise' (should be 'I would like to apologize') and 'that selected by her' (should be 'that she selected'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic structures. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and varied verbs to express your thoughts more naturally and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter. Examples include 'that would organised' (missing 'be'), 'a exam' (should be 'an exam'), 'a important' (should be 'an important'), and 'cannot miss' (missing the object 'it'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
