Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,
I hope this letter finds both of you in radiant health. I am writing this letter to thank you for the invitation of chris's birthday party.
I can apperantly say that chris will have best time at the party because you have invited all the friends and collegue to the venue. Moreover, Chris loves receiving gifts and I am also going to buy a gift for him. However, I will not be able to handover gift on his birthday. Beacuse of the my grandma's knee surgery, I will not be able to make it on the day.
Though, I already have made a plan to meet him after his special day. I am going to book a game room for both of us to compansate my absence on the birthday. I truly apologise for for this.
Thanking both of you again and you are great parents.
Yours lovingly,
Pam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why Chris would enjoy the party, provided a reason for your absence (grandma's surgery), and proposed a clear alternative plan to meet him. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents, maintaining a polite and appreciative register throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, fulfilling the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Though' to link your sentences. Paragraphing is used to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall structure is coherent and the message is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'radiant health' and 'compensate my absence' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. However, there are some spelling errors (e.g., 'apperantly' for 'apparently', 'collegue' for 'colleagues', 'compansate' for 'compensate') and minor word choice issues (e.g., 'handover gift' should be 'hand over the gift'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'thank you for the invitation of chris's birthday party' (should be 'to'), 'Beacuse of the my grandma's' (extra 'the'), and 'I already have made a plan' (word order). Despite these errors, your meaning remains clear throughout. To improve, focus on article usage and proofreading for small typos, as these minor inaccuracies occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
