Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr and Mrs collins,
I hope you are doing well, I am very glad that you invited me for chris birthday party. Chris will definitely love and enjoy this moment as he always love surprises. Parents like you is such a blessing who arrange surprises for their kids.
Unfortunately, I want to inform you that I could not attend party this time as I need to take my mother for doctor as she is not doing great these days and I she also need my presence. However, I will make sure to see chris different time. We are planning to go movie together next month and will spend time together for sure. Meanwhile, you all enjoy the surprise party and many many congratulations for chris birthday. I know he will feel absence of me but I am sorry for this inconvenience. I hope you understand my situation.
Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why Chris would enjoy the party, provided a reason for your absence, and suggested an alternative plan to meet. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents, although it could be slightly more formal given the context. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, fulfilling the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. However, the paragraphing is somewhat weak, as the entire body of the letter is presented as one block. Using clear paragraph breaks between the different points would improve the flow. While you use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Meanwhile', the transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt, and the overall structure would benefit from more varied linking phrases to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some natural expressions such as 'doing great' and 'inconvenience'. However, there is a lack of variety, and some word choices are repetitive or slightly imprecise, such as 'take my mother for doctor' (should be 'take my mother to the doctor'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid basic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding articles ('the doctor'), prepositions ('for chris birthday'), and subject-verb agreement ('Parents like you is'). You rely mostly on simple sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent use of articles and correct verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
