Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,
I hope you are doing well. I saw your email regarding the Chris surprise birthday party and I really want to be part of it. As I know he always love the surprises.
I think he will love the party as this birthday gonna be his last teen birthday and all his school friends will be there. Furthermore, the theme will be of marvels so no doubt of Chris will get disappoint.
However, I will not able to come to this surprise party as I have to come Australia after 2 weeks of his birthday for begging my college over there. Also, I already booked my flights tickets.
But, I will definately give him surprise when I will arrive there. I guess I will be able to give him surprise on the second day after I get landed. Moreover, I will be in touch with you for this surprise.
Looking forward to seeing You,
Take Care

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why Chris would enjoy the party, provided a clear reason for your absence, and proposed a plan to meet him later. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation regarding the 'marvels' theme is a bit unclear and could have been expanded to show more enthusiasm. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally slightly confusing, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the theme and Chris's reaction could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'regarding', 'furthermore', and 'definitely'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'begging my college' (likely meaning 'beginning my college studies') and 'get landed'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'As I know he always love the surprises' (subject-verb agreement), 'no doubt of Chris will get disappoint' (incorrect structure), and 'I will not able to come' (missing verb). While these errors are noticeable, the meaning remains clear. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms, prepositions, and sentence construction to reduce the frequency of these slips.
