Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Chris's parents,

I hope you are in good health. I am writing this letter to inform you that, unfortunately, I would not able to attend Chris's surprise party next month.

Firstly, I believe that he will love this party because he is not only interested in attending parties but also like to enjoy them. Also, he will get the opportunity to meet with other school friends such as Priyanka and Sushil by organizing this.

However, I would not attend this function as I have work commitments. My company will launch a new product in following month, and I have to be present in my company during that time in order to organized it well.

Moreover, I have an alternative plan. I will come to Australia after two months for business trip. So whether I will meet him before the beginning of meeting or after finishing it. It will allow us to spend time together.

I hope you will understand my situation.

Yours sincerely,

Kuljit Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why Chris would enjoy the party, provided a reason for your absence, and proposed a clear alternative plan to meet him. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's parents. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why Chris would enjoy the party is a bit repetitive ('interested in attending parties but also like to enjoy them'). To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons are more distinct and fully elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on one of the required points, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph ('before the beginning of meeting') is a bit unclear, as it is not explicitly stated what the meeting refers to. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'work commitments' and 'alternative plan'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'in following month' (missing 'the') and 'organized it well' (incorrect verb form). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure articles are used correctly to enhance the natural flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I would not able to' should be 'I would not be able to', and 'in order to organized it' should be 'in order to organize it'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic verb forms and article placement.
