Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about my presence on Chris's birthday as you have sent me an invitation to be the part of party.

As of 9th September, we all know that it's 19th birthday of Chris and everyboady is going to gather at your house, give surprise to Chris adn make this party as well as this day more enjoyable for him. Eventually, as you have invited all of his friends and classmates , he will for sure love and enjoy the surprise party that you have planned for him.One of the reason he will get happy is by seeing all his friends at his house with different gifts for him. Nothing can make a person happy more than seeing his/her family as well as friends enjoying and celebrating a big day of his/her life.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the birthday party because as of 9th September I am having an appointment with my dentist. For the last few 10 days, I am feeling a severe pain in my lower back teeth and that's why I visited the clinic last week where doctor told to do minor surgery on upcoming 9th.Also the clinic is bit far from ,y house so it would be eventually late till I come back to the town. I would for sure like to make a plan to meet Chris on and after 10th of September at anytime and at any place that is suitable or perfect according him.

Sending a lots of love as well as big birthday wishes to Chris. May god bless him and may he achieve all of his goals.

Yours truely,

Yatharth

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that Chris will enjoy seeing friends and receiving gifts, give a specific reason for missing the party, and suggest meeting after 10 September. The dentist appointment and planned minor surgery make your apology credible, while the proposed alternative meeting shows consideration. These relevant details meet the core requirements well. However, the explanation of why the surprise will be enjoyable repeats general ideas about friends, family and celebrating rather than developing what Chris personally would appreciate. The alternative plan is also quite open-ended: “at anytime and at any place” leaves the arrangements to others. A more specific suggestion, such as meeting for lunch on a particular day, would make this part more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the invitation, explain the appeal of the party, give your reason for not attending, and propose another meeting. Paragraphing helps distinguish these main points, and expressions such as “Unfortunately” signal the change to your apology. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “As of 9th September” is repeated and does not clearly connect the date to the surrounding ideas, while “Eventually” is not a natural transition for explaining why Chris will enjoy the party. The long paragraph about the dentist also combines several details and the alternative plan. Use more purposeful transitions and separate the proposed meeting into its own short paragraph to make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “surprise party,” “appointment,” “severe pain,” and “minor surgery.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “celebrating a big day of his life.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “be the part of party,” “make this party as well as this day more enjoyable,” and “Sending a lots of love.” Spelling errors such as “everyboady,” “truely,” and “adn” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for simpler, natural phrases and proofread carefully; for example, “be part of the party,” “make the day special,” and “lots of love” would be more idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the birthday party because…” However, there are several grammatical errors in longer constructions. For example, “For the last few 10 days, I am feeling” uses an unsuitable tense and time expression; “the doctor told to do minor surgery” is missing a grammatical object pattern; and “according him” needs a preposition. There are also article and punctuation problems, including “a appointment” and missing spaces after full stops. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Practise present perfect forms for continuing situations and check articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries.
