Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,

I hope you are doing well. I am obliged to receive your invitation for coming in the surprise birthday party of chris. Knowing chris since childhood, I am sure that he is going to love this move. I am also aware about his busy routine currently with the engineering courses he is enrolled with. Gettings warm regards of the closed ones shall bring him a bunch of happiness.

I am currently very busy with my ongoing schedule and need to complete some of the assignment work since they are due in sometime. Moreover, I saw expensive tickets online for a roundway trip to australia since we are approaching christmas.

I will have a less hectic schedule in the month of january next year. Hence, I did booked the slot of the month's last week. We can plan a gathering and celebrate post birthday celebrations with some of our good friends.

I also wish you best of health and always seek your blessings.

Yours Sincerely,

Yash Mehta.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you explain that Chris will enjoy seeing loved ones, give reasons you cannot attend, and suggest meeting in January. The childhood connection and his engineering workload make the party explanation relevant, while the assignment deadlines and travel costs explain your absence. The plan to meet in the last week of January is useful, but it would be stronger with a specific activity or proposed date and a clearer invitation to his parents. Some details are also unclear, such as whether the tickets are for a trip you have already planned or simply too expensive. The main ideas are present, but developing these points more precisely would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you discuss the party first, explain your absence in a separate paragraph, and then propose a later meeting. This makes the purpose easy to follow, and transitions such as “Moreover” and “Hence” help connect ideas. However, some links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship clearly. For example, “Hence, I did booked the slot” does not clearly follow from having a less hectic schedule, and “I am also aware about his busy routine” shifts the focus without a smooth connection to why he will enjoy the party. Use more natural links and make references explicit—for instance, clarify what “the slot” refers to—to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary, including “ongoing schedule,” “hectic schedule,” and “post birthday celebrations,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, several choices are unnatural or inaccurate for a friendly letter: “obliged to receive your invitation,” “coming in the surprise birthday party,” and “a bunch of happiness” do not express the ideas idiomatically. “Roundway trip” is also an unsuitable expression for travel, and “closed ones” is not the usual phrase for family and friends. These noticeable collocation and word-choice problems limit precision and sometimes make the tone sound overly formal. Prefer familiar, natural expressions that fit the situation, while retaining a few precise terms where they add meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including “Knowing Chris since childhood, I am sure that he is going to love this move” and “since we are approaching Christmas.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “I did booked” should be “I did book” or “I have booked,” and “some of the assignment work since they are due” has unclear agreement between “work” and “they.” The phrase “I will have a less hectic schedule in the month of January” is grammatical, but the following sentence needs a clearer structure. Check auxiliary verbs and ensure pronouns refer clearly to their nouns; more consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
