Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr and Mrs Collins,

I am writing this letter because i am feeling very happy to know that you are having a surprise birthday party for my dearest friend Chris.

Firstly, i am glad to know that my friend Chris's birthday is coming on November 21, we were spending a lot of time together while we were in school. We enjoyed our childhood and school time with each other. I know Chris likes surprises like gifts and party and he always enjoys and having fun while he is in party. Chris loves to spend that time with full of entertainment. I remember last time when you held a surprise party last year he was so happy and enjoyed a lot because there was so many things like cutting cake, dancing, different cusinine and many more things to do.

But, unfortunately, I will not able to attend his birthday party this year because i am travelling to sydney for my another project for my business. I have an urgent and very important meeting with CEO and Manager of my organisation for further business future plans and i have to attend that meeting which is going to held on the same day November 21, 2026. Although, I will sending him best wishes with a beautiful gift which he will love for sure.

Moreover, I will make plan to meet and greet him personally while i will be back from my business meeting. I will be back on November 23, 2026 so, i think i will meet him on next day once i will arrive and we will go out and spend whole day together and enjoy a lot.

Sorry for not attending his birthday party but i hope he will enojoy a lot. In advance, A very Happy Birthday to him and enjoy a lot brother.

Thank You,

Kishan Vaghela

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain that Chris enjoys surprises and recall the previous party, give a specific work-related reason for being unable to attend, and suggest meeting on November 24 after returning on November 23. These details make the letter relevant and personal. The explanation of why Chris will enjoy the event is supported with examples, although the list of activities and repeated comments about his enjoyment could be more concise. The alternative plan is clear, but could be made more definite by proposing a time or asking whether Chris is available. The friendly closing also suits the relationship. Overall, the task is covered well, with some ideas more fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening, separate paragraphs for the party, your absence, and the alternative meeting, followed by a closing. This makes the main information easy to locate. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “But, unfortunately,” and “Moreover” help signal the progression, though some feel mechanical, and “Firstly” is not followed by a matching sequence. There is also some repetition, particularly around Chris enjoying the party and the final birthday wishes. A few sentences contain several ideas joined together, which makes the flow less smooth. Use more natural transitions and divide longer sentences where the focus changes to make the progression more effortless.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas and include some relevant expressions, such as “surprise birthday party,” “urgent and very important meeting,” and “best wishes.” However, the range is often repetitive or imprecise: “enjoy a lot,” “spend that time with full of entertainment,” and “many more things to do” do not sound natural in this context. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “cusinine” and “enojoy,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating “enjoy” by choosing alternatives that fit the meaning, such as “have a great time” or “look forward to.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the message remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “I will not able to attend” needs “be,” while “I will sending him” should be “I will send him.” The sentence “he always enjoys and having fun” mixes incompatible verb forms, and “there was so many things” has a subject–verb agreement error. Some sentences also combine several clauses without clear punctuation, as in the account of the previous party. Practise accurate future forms and consistent verb patterns, and break long sentences into shorter units. These changes would improve control while preserving your personal tone.
