Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people love to work out or play sports for different reasons, such as better health and stay in shape at their lives. Some people hire an expert at health and beauty for more effectiveness, while others prefer to play sports. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons behind it and reason it as a positive or negative development.

Hiring a personal trainer has some advantages such as he or she can customise and recommend the best form of exercise that suit to the client personal health condition. For instance, they can suggest a lighter form of exercise to the client who is having knee pain or back pain at the start, and over the time, he or she can adjust the exercise type or number of reps based on the client's ability to perform safely. In addition, a personal trainer will suggest the food and dietary habits based on the client's needs and wants, such as foods for gaining muscles or tips for losing weight.

On the other hand, some individuals think hiring a personal trainer is costly, while they believe playing sports such as tennis or badminton or regularly doing exercise is far more sustainable and affordable. Moreover, they argue that hiring an expert by some people is because they want to show off their lifestyles on social media by taking pictures together with a trainer at gym and get impressions from families and friends. Furthermore, playing sports regularly brings stress-free and sustainable long-term adoption.

In my opinion, hiring a personal trainer is a positive development for some people that need special guidance for their health concern by customizing exercise forms and preparing proper dietary food and help in habit development. Meanwhile, it is more expensive than any sport or exercise. Also, instead of showing off lifestyles by some people, playing sport or exercising is a better choice for long term purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, including the reasons for hiring personal trainers and your opinion on whether this is a positive or negative development. Your position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas could be more thorough. For example, while you mention that hiring a trainer is 'costly' and 'sustainable', you could expand on why this shift away from traditional sports is occurring in society (e.g., busy lifestyles or the desire for instant results). The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but ensure that your arguments are fully explored in the body paragraphs to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between the discussion of dietary habits and the shift to the disadvantages of personal trainers could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'hiring an expert by some people is because...', which is grammatically awkward and impacts the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'customise', 'dietary habits', and 'sustainable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'expert at health and beauty' is not the standard term for a fitness professional, and 'get impressions from families' is slightly unnatural. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but these occasional errors in collocation prevent a higher score. Focusing on more precise terminology related to fitness and health would improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Examples include 'better health and stay in shape at their lives' (should be 'to stay in shape in their lives') and 'the client who is having knee pain' (should be 'a client who has knee pain'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after periods. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit your score in this criterion.
