Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some nations, it is believed that some people are hiring a personal fitness trainer rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. This is because some people do better when being trained alone.

One of the reasons why people hire personal trainer is because of distractions. Many individuals get distracted when there are a lot of people doing the same thing they came to do. Some people in the sport or exercise classes came for different thing, many are there for pleasure, to make friends or just for fun. Some are also there to take pictures to post on social media, which result to distraction to others who are for serious business. Another good reason is because they needed the full attention of the trainer for higher and better results. The trainer checks their food menu and also keep up with them always. For example, some sport classes accommodate more than twenty candidates for training, which most person would not like to be there because you will not get the best training needed.

This is a positive development because personal trainer will get to assess their individuals better, knowing if you have any health issues and also the kind of exercise that's good for each persons, because some might have health issues that only needs minor exercises. On the other hand, it could be a negative development because you will get to meet friends who will distract you, also some trainer might not have time to teach personal classes resulting to skipping classes and not achieving anything good.

In conclusion, it is a positive trend because there is less distraction and a negative development because of missing classes by the trainer. It depends on how it is managed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for hiring personal trainers and whether this is a positive or negative development. The ideas are relevant, such as the desire to avoid distractions and the need for personalized attention. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on the negative aspects is a bit repetitive and lacks depth. While the position is clear, the arguments could be extended further with more specific examples or a more nuanced analysis of the societal implications to reach a higher band. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a discernible progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the reasons', 'Another good reason', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some pronoun usage is slightly ambiguous. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'distractions', 'personal fitness trainer', and 'health issues'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'result to distraction' (should be 'result in') and 'most person' (should be 'most people'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some trainer might not have time') and article usage ('the trainer checks their food menu'). Punctuation is mostly functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that hinder the flow. The complexity of the sentences is present, but the accuracy is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical errors and ensuring that complex structures are used with greater precision and control.
