Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people are considering hiring a personal trainer to get fit instead of playing sports or joining workout sessions. I believe there are many causes behind this phenomenon, which have advantages and disadvantages, which I will explain in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, professional fitness trainers are educated and experienced experts who have the knowledge and expertise to train all different body types. These experts not only teach physical activities but also create personalised meal plans considering all the calories an individual needs while achieving the set goal.

Secondly, playing any sports or joining exercise sessions requires training. Additionally, any sports and activity classes are fixed-time scheduled, which makes it difficult to keep up with rigorous work schedules. Although consistency is a must to achieve goals with this path, it is a slow process and less individualised focus. For instance, one of my friends used to attend Zumba classes once a week, but she was not getting the meal schedules and dietary plans to follow, which made it hard to pass the goals. Moreover, sports and yoga classes, like activities, aid in increasing stamina and confidence along with keeping your body fit and healthy.

In my opinion, it is a balanced development due to the needs of the situation and people. Someone who is looking forward to staying healthy should consider joining sports or exercise sessions. On the other side, someone who wants to build muscles and enhance the body shapes should focus on diet and hire an individual expert who can pay attention to every detail.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for hiring personal trainers and the evaluation of whether this is a positive or negative development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the reasons (expertise and flexibility) are clear, the discussion on whether it is a positive or negative development is brief and lacks depth. The conclusion attempts to present a balanced view, but it does not fully justify why this trend might be considered 'positive' or 'negative' in a broader societal context. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the implications of this shift, such as the impact on community sports or the accessibility of fitness.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from discussing the benefits of personal trainers to the limitations of sports classes is a bit abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the friend's example and the broader argument about 'individualized focus' could be more explicitly linked to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'phenomenon', 'personalized', 'rigorous', and 'individualized'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'pass the goals' (should be 'achieve the goals') and 'enhance the body shapes' (should be 'improve body composition' or 'tone the body'). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing feels slightly repetitive. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to health and fitness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'playing any sports or joining exercise sessions requires training' (which is slightly awkward) and 'sports and yoga classes, like activities, aid in increasing stamina' (the 'like activities' phrase is redundant). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are occasional errors in article usage and pluralization. The majority of your sentences are error-free, but the range of complex structures is not yet wide enough to consistently demonstrate high-level control.
