IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

An increasing number of people today prefer to work with a personal fitness coach instead of playing team sports or taking part in group exercise classes. This shift is mainly caused by busy work schedules and the desire for personalized workouts. In my opinion, this is a mostly positive trend because it leads to safer and faster health results, even though it can be expensive.

There are two major reasons why people choose personal trainers over traditional group activities. First, modern working life leaves people with very little free time. Group classes and sports teams operate on strict schedules, whereas a personal trainer can adapt to a client’s specific free hours. Second, individuals have different fitness goals and health conditions. A personal instructor designs a tailored workout plan that focuses on an individual’s weak areas and helps prevent injuries. For instance, a person with back pain will benefit far more from one-on-one professional guidance than from a general aerobics class. In my view, this movement towards individual coaching is largely a positive development. The primary benefit is higher efficiency and safety. When working directly with a trainer, people learn correct exercise techniques, which leads to better physical results in a shorter time frame.

On the other hand, some might argue that hiring a trainer reduces social contact and can be costly. While group sports build teamwork and cost less money, the tailored attention from a personal trainer provides far greater personal health benefits and long-term motivation for most individuals.

In conclusion, people are choosing personal trainers because of flexible scheduling and customized workout plans. Although it costs more than playing group sports, I believe this is a positive trend overall as it promotes safer exercise habits and better personal health outcomes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the reasons for the rise in personal trainers—specifically time constraints and the need for personalized health plans—and provide a clear position on whether this is a positive or negative development. Your arguments are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of back pain to illustrate the benefits of tailored guidance. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your stance. To reach the highest band, ensure that the counter-argument regarding social contact is explored with slightly more depth, perhaps by contrasting the psychological benefits of group camaraderie with the physical benefits of individual training.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the reasons for the trend and your opinion is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First,' 'Second,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'tailored workout plan,' 'professional guidance,' and 'long-term motivation' show a level of precision and flexibility. You avoid repetition and use topic-specific terminology effectively. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. For example, instead of 'health results,' you might use 'health outcomes' or 'physical conditioning.' Overall, your lexical control is strong and supports your arguments well without any noticeable errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinating conjunctions like 'whereas,' 'although,' and 'which' effectively to create complex sentences that are grammatically accurate. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. To move toward a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or inverted structures, to demonstrate even greater flexibility in your grammatical range.
