Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many nations, people prefer to schedule their fitness with a personal trainer instead of other activities such as group exercise or games. In my opinion, it is a positive development, because it assists people to gain confidence for using the equipment and tone up their body with proper guidance.

To begin with, hiring a personal trainer helps people to boost their confidence in using the fitness machines in the gym. As there is a huge population who don't know how to use the equipment in the gym in a correct manner, personal trainers who have vast knowledge and hands-on experience guide people about the correct posture while using the gym accessories and machines. This not only helps to enhance the knowledge of the individual, but also they become proficient and confident to exercise by using machines in the right way. For instance, I booked six sessions with a personal trainer in the Goodlife Fitness gym because I had zero knowledge of using the equipment in a proper way and had less confidence about strength-building.

In addition to this, a scheduled visit with a personal trainer helps to achieve body fitness by step-by-step guidance. To explain this, when a person books a session with a personal trainer, the first thing is their current fitness level is checked by the trainer, and then a diet plan and nutrition are suggested by him/her according to the needs of the body of a person who has booked a class with a personal trainer. The personal trainer not only plans the exercises for an individual but also reports the strength building and encourages the body to tone. Thus, hiring a personal trainer makes people able to achieve their fitness goals.

In conclusion, a large number of people in certain countries tend towards employing a personal fitness trainer rather than playing games or joining the group classes for exercising. I strongly affirm that this is a positive approach, as full guidance from a personal trainer helps people not only to shape their body, but also they become quite confident to use the machines associated with fitness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the trend and your opinion on whether it is a positive or negative development. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided—gaining confidence with equipment and receiving personalized guidance—are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as your personal experience at the gym. To reach a higher band, ensure that you fully explore the 'reasons' aspect by perhaps contrasting the social benefits of group classes with the individual focus of personal training, which would add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'In addition to this,' and 'Thus' to link your ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied referencing. For instance, in the second paragraph, the repetition of 'personal trainer' could be reduced by using pronouns or synonyms like 'the professional' or 'the instructor' to improve the natural flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'hands-on experience,' 'correct posture,' and 'achieve their fitness goals' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'schedule their fitness,' which is slightly unnatural; 'manage their fitness' or 'organize their fitness routine' would be better. You also tend to repeat the phrase 'personal trainer' frequently. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions would help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'assists people to gain confidence for using' (better: 'assists people in gaining confidence in using') and 'reports the strength building' (better: 'monitors progress in strength'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures. To improve, focus on refining your use of prepositions and ensuring subject-verb agreement remains consistent throughout longer, more complex sentences.
