Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for hiring personal trainers and the evaluation of whether this is a positive or negative development. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'negative impact' focuses heavily on cost and the limited time of a trainer, but could be more deeply explored by discussing the loss of social interaction or the lack of motivation found in group sports. The supporting examples, such as the 2023 health department survey, are generic and lack specific detail, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'In other words', and 'Shifting towards', which help guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where 'there' is used instead of 'their'. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the transition between the benefits of trainers and the drawbacks could be smoother to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'excerise' instead of 'exercise', 'there' instead of 'their', 'differnt' instead of 'different', 'soend' instead of 'spend'). These errors are noticeable and detract from the quality of the writing. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'constructive', 'destructive', and 'guidance', the range is limited, and the repetition of basic words like 'money' and 'help' suggests a need for a broader lexical repertoire to express ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it save time', 'internet have greatly helped'), incorrect word forms, and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces often placed before commas. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the lack of control over basic grammatical rules and the high error rate prevent the response from achieving a higher score. More attention to proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and spelling is necessary.
