IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

An increasing number of people give preference to hire an expert trainer for fitness exercises, instead of taking part in sports or doing exercises by themselves. Two main reasons are responsible to hire a personal trainer, and in my opinion, it is a positive development if they choose them wisely and should not rely on them always.

One main reason why some people prefer to do exercises with experts is because of their experience and knowledge. When people start to do their fitness exercises with the proper guidance of their trainers, then they are more confident about their moves and stunts, allowing them to do exercises based on their requirements such as if they want to loose their weight then they always recommend them to running machines and push-ups, in turn, they follow the proper rules and regulations based on their instructions.

Diet plans and less chances of injuries are the other causes which forces them to hire a trainer. By hiring a personal trainer, people can not only get knowledge about the diet plans, vitamins and protein sources, but also they are assured about the less chances of the injuries during exercise time, because they are under the supervision of them. As a result, they also become health conscious because they are addicted to minerals enriched food.

However, an excessive dependence on the trainers may effect on their budget and routine activities. Hiring fitness trainers is not affordable all the time because they could spend a large amount of money for membership plans and trainee fee if they are only dependent on them instead of taking part in sports and other exercises like walking, running and yoga. They should choose them accordingly in the beginning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for hiring a trainer and whether it is a positive or negative development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the reasons (expertise and injury prevention) are clear, the discussion on whether it is positive or negative is underdeveloped. The conclusion is incomplete, ending abruptly with 'the superviion', which fails to provide a summary or a final thought. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully explored and that the essay concludes in a coherent, finished manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'because' and 'as a result'. The transition between paragraphs is functional but lacks sophistication. Crucially, the final paragraph is incomplete, which significantly disrupts the logical flow and coherence of the essay. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that every paragraph has a clear, finished structure will help improve this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'health conscious' and 'minerals enriched food', though the latter is slightly awkward in collocation. Some word choice errors occur, such as 'loose their weight' (should be 'lose') and 'effect on their budget' (should be 'affect'). While the range is sufficient to communicate the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'give preference to hire' (should be 'give preference to hiring'), 'reasons are responsible to hire' (should be 'reasons for hiring'), and 'less chances of the injuries' (should be 'fewer chances of injury'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure occasionally feels strained. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
