Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many parts of the country, an increasing number of individuals are hiring personal fitness trainers instead of participating in sports or attending exercise classes due to several factors. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this emerging trend and examine its both positive and negative impacts on individuals' lives.

To begin with, there are many several reasons why people choose personal fitness trainers. One of the major factors is that people who do not have enough time to participate in sports and attend exercise sessions, therefore they opt for personal gym trainer, who can help them to maintain a regular fitness schedule. Another factor is that personal trainers also give training personally according to persons' age, fitness level and specific needs

On the one hand, choosing personal trainers can have positive impacts on individuals' lives by providing regular and properly planned exercises. Personalised programmes can help people achieve specific goals, such as losing weight or building muscle. For instance, gym trainers personally guide their clients by explaining the benefits of performing exercises correctly and the potential risks of using improper techniques.

Conversely, it has some negative effects while choosing personal trainers because personalised trainers are quite expensive. Moreover, people may become dependent on trainers and struggle to exercise independently.

To conclude, the growing preference for personal trainers can be attributed to factors such as busy lifestyles, personalised exercise programmes and professional guidance. Although, this trend may be expensive for some people, I believe it is largely a positive development because it encourages individuals exercise regularly and achieve their fitness goals safely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and providing a clear position on whether it is a positive or negative development. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of 'busy lifestyles' and 'personalised programmes'. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why people choose trainers over sports could be more deeply explored with more specific examples. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from more detailed supporting evidence to reach a higher band level. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons, the positive impacts, and the negative impacts. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the one hand', 'Conversely', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is minor repetition in the phrasing of ideas. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be more fluid to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'fitness schedule', 'personalised programmes', and 'improper techniques'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'many several reasons' (a redundancy) and 'personalised trainers' (where 'personal trainers' is the standard collocation). To improve, the writer should aim to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control and precision in their writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'examine its both positive and negative impacts' (incorrect word order) and 'individuals exercise' (missing 'to' before the infinitive). Additionally, the sentence 'One of the major factors is that people who do not have enough time... therefore they opt for...' contains a comma splice and redundant conjunctions. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex sentence construction. Increasing the variety of sentence types and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate the score.
