Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many countries, an increasing number of people are choosing to hire personal fitness trainers instead of taking part in sports or group exercise classes. This trend is largely driven by the desire for personalized guidance and the busy lifestyles of modern workers. Although it may reduce the social aspect of exercise, I believe it is a positive development overall.
One important reason for the growing popularity of personal trainers is that they offer programmes tailored to an individual’s needs. Unlike a general exercise class, where everyone follows the same routine, a trainer can design workouts according to a client’s fitness level, health condition and personal goals. For instance, someone recovering from a knee injury may need low-impact exercises, while another person may want to build muscle or lose weight. Personal trainers can also correct poor technique, which reduces the risk of injury.
Another reason is convenience and motivation. Many people have demanding jobs and find it difficult to attend sports sessions held at fixed times. A trainer can arrange sessions before or after work, or even provide online coaching. In addition, people are more likely to exercise consistently when they have paid for an appointment and know that someone is monitoring their progress. In my experience, several friends who struggled to follow a gym routine became much more disciplined after working with a trainer.
In conclusion, people are increasingly hiring fitness trainers because of personalized support, flexibility and accountability. Despite the cost and the possible loss of social interaction, this development is beneficial overall, provided that affordable public sports facilities and group activities remain available.

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the reasons for the rise in personal trainers, specifically citing personalized guidance, convenience, and accountability. Your position on whether this is a positive or negative development is clear from the introduction and is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of injury recovery and the scheduling flexibility for busy professionals. The conclusion effectively summarizes your main points while acknowledging the potential downsides, which demonstrates a balanced and thoughtful approach to the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'For instance', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct reasons, and a concise conclusion. The referencing is clear throughout, and the flow of information is natural and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'personalized guidance', 'demanding jobs', and 'accountability' show a solid command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys your meaning well, it is generally standard. To reach the highest band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations or idiomatic expressions. However, the current range is sufficient to express your ideas with precision, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('provided that...') and concessive clauses ('Although it may reduce...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that cause confusion or difficulty for the reader. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical accuracy, which is consistent with a high-scoring response.
