Student answer (Band 7.0)
In some countries, an increasing number of people are choosing to hire personal fitness trainers instead of participating in sports or exercise classes. This trend can be attributed to several factors, and I believe it is largely a positive development because personal training can provide more personalised and effective guidance.
One major reason for this trend is that personal trainers can design exercise programmes according to an individual's specific needs and fitness level. Unlike group classes, where everyone generally follows the same routine, a personal trainer can focus on a person's particular goals, such as losing weight, building muscle or improving flexibility. In addition, many people have busy lifestyles and find it difficult to attend scheduled exercise classes. A personal trainer can offer greater flexibility by arranging sessions at a convenient time and location.
Another reason is that people may achieve their fitness goals more efficiently with professional supervision. Trainers can monitor their clients' progress, correct their techniques and motivate them to remain consistent. For example, someone who wants to lose weight may find it difficult to maintain a regular exercise routine alone. With the support of a trainer, they may receive a suitable workout plan and regular encouragement, which can help them stay committed.
In my opinion, this is a positive development, although it may not be affordable for everyone. Personal training can reduce the risk of injuries because exercises are performed under professional supervision. Moreover, personalised programmes may help people achieve better results in a shorter period of time. However, hiring a trainer is generally more expensive than joining a sports club or exercise class, which means that this option is mainly available to people with sufficient disposable income.
In conclusion, the growing popularity of personal fitness trainers is mainly due to their flexibility, individualised programmes and professional guidance. Despite the higher cost, I believe this is a positive development because it can encourage people to exercise regularly and achieve their health and fitness goals more effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining the reasons for hiring a personal trainer and giving a direct opinion on whether it is a positive or negative development. The position is well-maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are thoroughly developed and supported with relevant examples, such as how someone wanting to lose weight benefits from professional supervision. The arguments are logically extended without relying on vague generalisations. The response meets all task requirements successfully, earning a band 8.0 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, such as 'In addition', 'Another reason is', and 'Moreover', ensuring smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the reasons from the evaluation of whether the trend is positive or negative. Cohesion is well-managed, leading to a strong band 7.5 descriptor match.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, such as 'disposable income', 'professional supervision', and 'tailored exercise programmes'. Word choice is generally precise, and collocation is natural throughout the response. Although there are no glaring lexical errors, the vocabulary range is slightly more standard than what is typically expected for a Band 8, placing it firmly and solidly within Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The student uses a wide variety of complex structures effectively, including conditional clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Unlike group classes, where everyone generally follows the same routine...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and control over grammar and punctuation is consistently high. There are only very occasional minor flaws, but these never impede communication or strain the reader. This level of syntactic flexibility and high accuracy aligns well with the Band 8 descriptors.
