Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent times, several individuals prefer to have a personal fitness trainer instead of indulging into sports or attending exercise classes. There are several reasons for this trend such as having a customized workout plan, flexible timing, etc. In my opinion, I see this as a positive rather than negative development because it can help someone achieve their fitness goals faster and become more independent.

Firstly, choosing a personal trainer helps you build your own workout structure. Fitness instructor can create a plan which perfectly fits the need of the person. While playing sports can help someone achieve overall fitness, it does not help in acheiving anything specific. For instance, if a someone has a personal goal to build muscles and strength, then it would be ideal to have a trainer who can help with this target rather than joining a random badminton sports club.

Secondly, a person can choose the workout time according to his/her own schedule which makes it even more accessible and ideal to have a personal trainer. Although execise classes can help achieve fitness goals, they are less flexible as they have fixed timings. For example, if a working woman wants to workout but the classes are only available during working hours, then it would be ideal for her to workout in the evening during weekdays and in the morning during weekends. Hence, to have such flexiblity she will choose to have a personal instructor instead of joining a fitness class.

In my view, I see this development as positive instead of negative because everyone has different pace and efficiency when it comes to fitness, joining a sports club or exercise classes can make people more dependent. Whereas, having a personal fitness trainer makes them independent while achieving their goals quickly. For instance, a person might have to cope with the slow pace of others inside a class while an individual strength trainer does not involve anyone else.

In conclusion, the trend of including a personal trainer for fitness goals rather than getting into sports and classes due to customization and flexibilty is very positive because it can help achieving the target faster and independently.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by clearly identifying the reasons why people hire personal fitness trainers, such as customized workout plans and flexible timing, and distinctly stating a position that this is a positive development. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the scenario of the working woman. The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay. The progression of ideas is logical and fully satisfies the requirements of a Band 7 response, as all parts of the prompt are addressed with well-supported arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct main point. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive, and some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the structure provides a clear logical progression throughout, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'customized workout plan', 'accessible', and 'efficiency'. There are a few minor lexical slips and spelling errors, such as 'acheiving' instead of 'achieving', and slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'indulging into sports'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient for some flexibility and precision, and the errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.5, which rounds to 6.5 or is best represented by a 6.0 based on frequency of errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses such as 'Although exercise classes can help achieve fitness goals, they are less flexible...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'if a someone' and 'to have such flexiblity she will choose to have', alongside punctuation slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the complex structures show an active attempt to vary grammatical range. This performance reflects the criteria for a Band 6 score.
