Student answer (Band 7.0)

In some of nations of the world, myriad people are choosing personal fitness trainers instead of doing physical activities to remain fit. The most probable reason for this shift is the desire for efficiency and customization. In my opinion, this is largely a negative development as it reduces community sport participation.

The primary reason people hire personal trainers is the need to get customized fitness programs according to their needs. This enables them to stay consistent through the workout sessions to achieve their goals. The Secondary reason is that this helps them to bring efficiency in their routine unlike generic group classes that stay on disoriented schedules. Moreover tailored instructions lead to safer results, less injury occurrences and therefore declining burden on public healthcare systems.

On the other hand, the preference for fitness trainers results in notable social and financial drawbacks. Team sports and group classes foster social interaction, improve communication between teammates and develops team spirit, whereas, one-to-one sessions are mostly isolated and transactional. Personal training can be costly, potentially turning personal health optimization into luxury for high earners only. For example, the fee for personal trainers often costs $80 per hour, making this personal fitness only accessible to wealthy sections. Furthermore, relying completely on a fitness trainer can result in over- dependency and reduced self-reliance. This will prevent the individual from acquiring of basic fitness knowledge and deprive one from developing intrinsic motivation.

To Reiterate, the movement towards personal training is motivated by customized programming and efficiency, however its negatives outweigh the positives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. It identifies the reasons for hiring personal trainers, such as the desire for efficiency, customization, and safety, while also presenting a clear position that this is a negative development. The student extends and supports ideas well, discussing social drawbacks like the loss of team spirit, financial costs, and the risk of over-dependency. While some ideas could have been slightly more elaborated to reach a Band 8 level, the task is fully addressed with a consistent, clear position maintained throughout. This aligns closely with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured cohesively with a logical flow from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct theme (reasons for hiring trainers vs. drawbacks). Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are employed effectively to connect ideas, although occasional minor awkwardness in transitions keeps the response at a solid Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'customization', 'disoriented schedules', 'transactional', and 'intrinsic motivation'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in collocation or phrasing, such as 'declining burden' instead of 'reducing the burden' and 'injury occurrences' instead of 'incidence of injuries'. However, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow the writer to convey precise meanings, making this a strong Band 7 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures successfully. There is evidence of good grammatical control, with frequent error-free sentences (e.g., 'Team sports and group classes foster social interaction...'). However, a few minor errors persist, such as article omission ('deprive one from developing' instead of 'deprive an individual of developing') and minor preposition slips ('acquiring of basic fitness knowledge'). These errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in Band 7.
