IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, the growing popularity of personal fitness trainers has become an increasingly debated issue. While people have different views on this matter, I believe that this trend is mainly caused by people's desire for personalised guidance, and it is generally a positive development. This essay will examine the main aspects of this issue.

To begin with, one important point is that people hire personal trainers because they can receive exercise programmes designed specifically for their individual goals. This can have a significant impact on people's health and fitness progress. For example, a person who wants to lose weight can receive a training plan based on their fitness level and progress. Therefore, personalised support can make exercise more suitable for individual needs.

Furthermore, another significant point is that personal training is a positive development because professional guidance can help people exercise more effectively and consistently. This can encourage individuals to maintain a healthier lifestyle. For instance, beginners can learn correct exercise techniques from a trainer and follow a regular training schedule. Consequently, they may achieve better results while developing healthy exercise habits.

However, it is also important to consider that personal training can be expensive because clients usually have to pay for individual sessions. Although this may make personal training less accessible to some people, the professional support it provides can still be valuable for those who can afford it.

In conclusion, I believe that the increasing use of personal fitness trainers is generally a positive development. This is mainly because personalised exercise programmes can meet individual needs and professional guidance can improve the quality of training. Overall, these benefits can encourage people to exercise more effectively and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring the reasons behind the popularity of personal fitness trainers, such as the desire for tailored exercise programmes, and evaluating whether this trend is a positive or negative development. The writer maintains a clear position throughout the essay, stating that the trend is driven by personalised guidance and is largely positive. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as a person wanting to lose weight receiving a customized plan and beginners learning correct techniques. The arguments flow logically from reasons to the evaluation of the development, fulfilling the Band 7 requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, introduced with appropriate cohesive phrases such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate the introduction, body paragraphs addressing reasons and evaluation, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are handled well without feeling overly mechanical, and referencing remains clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the arguments effortlessly. This performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing task-appropriate collocations such as 'personalised guidance', 'fitness level', 'professional support', and 'healthier lifestyle'. While the vocabulary choices are largely safe and functional rather than daringly sophisticated, they are used accurately. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. The use of less common items like 'accessible' and 'consequently' shows an awareness of style, though it stops short of the sustained flexible range required for a Band 8.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer exhibits good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully deploying a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Complex structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('While people have different views...', 'For example, a person who wants to lose weight can receive...'), are used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While the range of complex structures could be slightly wider to push into higher bands, the grammatical accuracy and control demonstrated here clearly merit a Band 7.5.
