Student answer (Band 6.5)

Throughout different nations, it is becoming more common for people to hire a personal exercise coach instead of partaking in sport or exercise classes.

There are many reasons for this and I believe it is a positive change as it tailors exercise goals and also boosts employment opportunitites for trainers.

Firstly, there are various reasons for this increase. One such reason includes people nowadays prioritise their health more and more with fitness and exercise playing a pivotal role in people's lives and benfiting from the positive impact they have on health and well-being. As a result, there is a greater need for personal fitness trainers. Additionally, many people may feel too anxious to engage in sports or exercises classes that they are not confident in. For example a person may find it difficult to join a sports club that practices something they have never tried before. Thus, there is a greater need for personalised fitness trainers and the amount of employed fitness coaches increases.

This can be viewed as a positive development as it demonstrates people are starting to take their health more seriously. One positive of more fitness coaches being employed is individuals are more likely to avail of tailored exercise programs and reap the benefits of the exercise. This may be more acheivable for people who are apprehensive about joining a team or gym. Indiivduals can learn from the trainer and it is generally easier to feel more comfortable around one person as opposed a group setting. Moreover, the fact more fitness trainers are being employed is a positive economic development as it increases the employment rate.

To conclude, in today's world personal fitness trainers are often hired as people prioritise their health and this is a beneficial development. Not only are inidviduals more likely to engage in exercise and enhance their health and well-being, but more jobs are created and therefore I believe it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons behind the trend of hiring personal trainers and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative development, fulfilling the requirements for the mid-band level. The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay, stating that the trend stems from a greater focus on health and anxiety reduction, and that it is beneficial. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the discussion around gym anxiety in the second paragraph, which echoes points made in the third paragraph. To reach a higher level, the ideas could be extended with more specific, concrete examples rather than generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, demonstrating the strong structural features associated with the upper-mid band. Information and ideas are coherently arranged, with each paragraph having a distinct focus: introduction, reasons, evaluation, and conclusion. The writer uses cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader through the text. While referencing is generally clear, paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, though occasional mechanical transitions keep the text from achieving a more fluid, natural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'partaking', 'pivotal role', and 'apprehensive'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'opportunitites', 'benfiting', 'acheivable', and 'inidviduals'. Collocations are mostly acceptable, but some phrases border on awkwardness. The vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, but greater precision and flawless spelling are needed to step up to the next tier.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several error-free sentences, though some grammatical slips persist, such as article omissions and minor preposition usage errors (e.g., 'as opposed a group setting' missing 'to'). Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to produce a wider variety of complex structures with more frequent error-free sentences and tighter control over agreement and prepositions.
